Putting my photos online in a continuous scroll format with no commenting and just allowing anyone to look at them is probably the only reason people do.
The more people i shoot the more people habitually look, because they are regularly in the photos. ...or they just like style/looking at people, like I do. This is probably not the same as the commercial/fame context OP is probably asking about.
The millisecond you try to profit from it you are doing a different thing. But there probably is a middle ground. A schoolmate of mine is a professional photographer, one who employs staff, and he likes government jobs.
