My RX100M5A has been broken since a drop. For a fix, at least I'd need to replace the motherboard and the flex cable connecting the EVF board, capacitor, NFC, etc. I don't know where to get parts and if that will fix all the problems. At least the motherboard for the RX100III is available at Aliexpress for about 100 EUR.
After several such cameras, I actually know I don't need a compact camera option that either doesn't fit in my trousers or that quickly sucks in terms of image quality. Compromising more on quality, replacing it with a mobile phone would be an option, where such covers a wider range of focal length, but primarily a good wide of about 24mm.
Somehow, though, I'm also mourning the optical zoom of the RX100 series, despite I know I wasn't happy with the series either.
My recent usage has only been: for snapshots the mobile phone, even at night. For photographing slides and notes in talks, the RX100.
Before COV and with more time using the one I have with me, the RX100 was always a compromise for me in terms of size.
It didn't fit in my pockets and needed a case or a strap. It was essentially only protected, if not in use. In use it dangled around in a halfcase or without case. Even a flatter GR wouldn't be pocketable in my regard.
In terms of focal length I mostly used the Sony at 24mm, next most used it at 70mm.
In terms of performance, 24mm f/4 ISO100 sported the best results. If these settings were very off from that, the quality would sometimes bother me. Especially at night I'd have loved more aided modes that work around sensor limitations e.g. like the Google Pixel mobile phones do.
Basically, I benefited from it mostly in the backpack - to have some 24-70mm optical focal range with me.
And now I have no idea what to do. I know nothing about phones, doubt a replacement RX100VA is a fit, doubt a more recent model will be more convenient to use, don't know what other dedicated camera options are available. Please help.
