How in the world does anyone competently put together a collection of photos? Does it just take time sitting with and looking through them?
I'm trying to organize a collection of photos and it's at a point where no groupings are jumping out at me, and it's kind of frustrating

You look at them, you see which ones are familiar or have a similar composition, you put them together. Now do that for every photo, for every shot in your life.

Why do people ask these questions expecting to be spoonfed? Just get out there and do you own thing. Stop thinking photography is some sort of learning curve.

It's not like there's much you can spoonfeed me here. I'm looking to see if anyone has tips for when they got stuck doing something similar, specifically how to get unstuck looking for the best groupings

Like I said, hon. Similar composition, or if you're real brave, try with matching colour profiles. That's now how I do collections of photos. It's really in the mind of the beholder on how you do things, we can't really give you pointers or tips because this is a very subjective topic.

You need to know what to look for. It depends on your ability to discern and interpret graphical and semantic connections. And for that, your photos first must have semantic and graphical signs that are expressive enough.

In other words, if your fotos are shit, there's nothing you can do. A meaningful set requires meaningful photographs.

I think if you want series you're supposed to know this before shooting. You're not going to get a complete and meaningful body of work by organizing random shots.

A very complex question, actually. It's regularity that is the corner stone of style. Ideally you are aware of it as you shoot. It can be achieved with equipment used, in recording medium, in post, print, tilt, angle, it can even go into minute details like consistency with focal distance. As for the more direct answer to the question, strict organization is your best friend. Rating, keywording and grouping photos regularly will net a good base from which it is possible to draw photos faster. Then, when there exists a smaller batch, it can be pruned and further organised as a complete work. A good tool for that is printing small samples and making a collage out of them.

I've got a fairly consistent theme, but my question is about pairing them up and then ordering the pairs to flow cohesively. It felt like an awfully daunting task, but I did get the pairings roughly finalized last night after changing up my tactic for looking through the singular photos

Got all that done. I have my prints and have been sorting through them and agonizing over which photo would pair best with which other photo. I have perfectionist tendencies so I feel I need to get it right NOW on the first go through
