Replace the Tamron with the 70-210 USM Canon has, and the Zenit with an FD Mount Canon, then I would be using this all day.

What optical formula results in such an oddly small change in aperture size? I thought it was either fixed or it shrank a substantial amount.

I had one of those lenses years ago
Apparently it was a breakthrough at the time because of the aperture and the fact the focus doesn't really change at different foal lengths, but I found there was loads of colour fringing
