You see people handling X-Pro bodies all the time without handgrips and thumb rests just fine.
However, if you plan on using any physically large or heavy lenses, then the handgrip and thumb rest combo is just so nice.
I'd say, if you REALLY prefer the small formfactor of the X-E line, but don't see yourself using bigass lenses all the time, get it and use a grip and/or thumb rest when you're breaking out he big stuff.
But if you're okay with the SLR style body of the X-T line, just go with that to save money and avoid hassle.
