Try again in the spring or check out some different habitats. Learn about what's in your area, and take notes of what they eat, where they live, etc. Learn about local plants to understand what insects might hang out there. For example, shrubs with waxy leaves are typical web spider hangouts, where they try to catch flying insects, and you're unlikely to find herbivorous bugs there because they can't eat the leaves. Visual hunters are more likely to be sitting out on larger leaves where they have a wide field of view, and there's a lot of trial and error mastering ways to approach without alerting them. Finally, you'll have to put a lot more time in it. Like most wildlife you'll often find the most activity in the morning and you can often find bugs sunning themselves to get their bodies going and dry off morning dew. I often spend at least a couple hours at a given location and even then don't always get any keepers I'm happy with.

Insect (especially bee) population collapse has been talked about plenty in the media. Maybe not politicians but that's because bugs don't stir the voter's soul.

And of course it's (primarily) caused by fossil fuels. Maybe try and be brave and read about science without whichever media filter you normally choose to use.

This is pedantic. Technically many insects are not "true bugs" (order Hemiptera) either. Colloquially, the term "bug" is often used to describe any small terrestrial arthropod, whether it be an insect, arachnid or even a land crustacean like woodlice. Pic related, an arachnid but I'm sure anyone who found it in an old book would call it a bug.

Once saw a vid of a Japanese photographer who shoots insects. Had a rig on his camera with two intersecting beams that would trigger the shutter when both were broken. All he had to do was set focus at the intersection point, then he could just push the rig into even flying/hovering bugs.
