I don't think the explanation is that unreasonable (hood creating a pocket for warmer air). Sounds like the better solution is to just keep the gear outside / cold, rather than keep taking it in and out of the car.

Not if you are using the factory correct hood. They literally design the lens hood so it doesn't vignette.

I read others testing it out and found that even a cold camera and hood introduces some haze. Seems like it's better to avoid the hood altogether in these kinds of temps.

It's happened to me a couple times. I have a 50mm lens with a rather small front element that's recessed back into the lens itself. If I take it out of the climate controlled car into the warm, humid Florida air where I live, it immediately fogs up and even if I wipe it off it just fogs up again. I have to wait a good while for it to become clear. My other lenses fog up too but are fine once wiped down.

It can happen with the wrong size hood or combining a filter with the correct hood on some lenses. My 24 2.8 af-d does this.

Yes, I'm talking about vignetting.

I think he's clickbaiting and I won't give him the views. I'm up North and I shoot sharp photos, always with a hood, no problem.

Pic related, used a bigger file to show more detail. Weather station data for that day clocked a low of 9f and a mean temp of 26f. This would have been somewhere around mid-teens.

Ever see the the sun warming a car on a cold day and the heat waves rippling the air right above the car, that's what is going on here.
You should always let your gear equalize to the ambient air temp especially telephotos, in the summer you can get condensation on everything bringing a AC cooled camera out into hot humid air as well.
