do you guys edit your pictures? and if you guys do, what do you mostly change? i just found out that my university gives every student a free adobe creative cloud subscription to every student and i've been fucking a bit around on Lighroom. I've never really edited pictures before so I don't know what I'm doing either.

Thanks, Ill shoot it at box speed and maybe a few at 320 or something for good measure. I tend to prefer provia 100 shot at 80, maybe its the same with 400x.

Now the question everyones gonna advice me not to do with the second roll but Id want to: what does pushing it look like? Fuji says it can be shot 200-3200, which seems crazy. But 800, 1600 maybe?

I wouldn't recommend going over two stops. Personally, I wouldn't go over 800. I'd stay at 400 unless the light conditions kind of force me to push the film a stop. It could also be an aesthetic thing I guess. Provia 400x is grainier and has way more contrast than 100, so overexposing the film a stop or two will cause increase of two mentioned thingies

Slide film is so magical as well, enjoy shooting it!

I like b&w but I think the biggest handicap is the dog cheese rangefinder and london being grey and relatively low light. I'll probably load some into my nikon and see what I get, and maybe see about getting my rangefinder re-aligned or something

For color I usually edit less than digital just because the starting point already has a 'look' so I'm usually just color correcting, balancing exposure, etc.

Your edit is very subtle but I prefer it to the original.
Also please export as JPEG and not PNG.

accidentally posted this question in the wrong thread....

How to focus wide open with a rangefinder if the rangefinder patch isn't where I want the focus to be?

Say I'm shooting a portrait close up at f/2.

I focus on the eyes with the rangefinder, but then I recompose the image and the focal plane obviously shifts (the patch is not on the eyes anymore).

How do I keep the focus on the eyes if the focal plane isn't parallel to the film plane and the rangefinder patch is off center?

I'm having a really hard time explaining this... hopefully the image conveys what I'm trying to say!

Rangefinders are just not suited for this kind of work. Get an SLR or use smaller apertures and try to guess.

I've deleted 99% of my film scans. Pic related is one of the few I've kept on my computer, it's probably 10 years old, but I just love that one, it's nothing special but the blur and the colors please me immensely, I don't know why.

To hell with commercial 35mm, complete waste. Ecn-2 stock is superior in literally every way, I dont know why Ive wasted money on c41 when I home dev it anyway.

Ordered a bulk loader, 100ft of vision3 500t and a 1 liter bellini kit. The film and the kit cost just around 100 euros, getting me down to 5.5 euros per roll including dev. This is 2 euros cheaper a roll than the cheapest c41 stock by itself in my local shop. And I'm getting the cream of the crop stock, literally no other stocks are as technically advanced as kodaks vision 3. I shoot 35mm mostly at night so getting a tungsten balanced stock out the gate is great too.

Also, anyone have experience with the bellini kit? Does the remjet separate well?

Oh and the film I got locally from a motion picture lab, but it wasnt any cheaper than you can find on eBay, just easier. On ebay you can get a 100ft roll for around 70 euros, thats ~ 18 rolls of 36. The 1 L kit is just enough to dev the whole roll of 100ft.

I just did some calculation for myself, so why not post them. The two films I bought last month from my local photo store compared to buying a 30m/100ft roll (that gives you 18 films) from a German site I found.

>Ilford HP5 Plus 400/135-36
7.5 from my local photo store
105.38 for a roll = 5,85
(would save 1,65 Euros a film)
>Ilford PAN F Plus 50/135-36
8.5 from my local photo store
106,99 for a roll = 5,88
(would save 2,62 Euros a film)

It definitely stacks up in time. Saving ~2 Euros a film would mean you're saving 36 Euros with each roll, which would cover the initial investment for buying empty cartridges and the film loader (~100 Euros) after three purchases of rolls.

Yeah, stills stocks dont have as much difference in price between bulk and prerolled, as youre buying it new while the 100ft and 200 ft rolls are short ends from motion picture reels from movie productions.

You dont need to buy new cartridges, if you dont have old ones of your own, you can ask a lab near you for used cassettes with some end sticking out. You just tape the start of your load to the bit sticking out, works just as well as taping the roll to the roller inside a reusable cassette.

Not that theyre expensive or anything, I just find the reusable ones, especially the plastic ones a little too easy to pop open by mistake. Used single use cassettes are a lot more secure.

well..... 62 years ago godard and coutard bought like 200 30m rolls of bulk ilford HPS (which is delta 3200 today) for breathless.
it was more similar to what HP5 is today back then and not delta 3200. they needed something with a fast ISO so they wouldn't have to use lighting outdoors since it'd fit the run and gun style filmmaking

He's not wrong, the only BW stock still used in movie prod is Kodaks 5222 or double-X. But I didnt recommend it since the guy likes low contrast stuff like hp5.

What's with Kodak Pro Image 100 being out of stock in practically all of Europe? I put in an order for 2 5-packs when it was down to €34. Never shot with this though. I've always used Fujifilm for color. Is it worth it to keep the orders or should I cancel and try to find some more Pro 400H for the money

Is there any reason I should not get a Mamiya 645?

I would like a small medium format camera with a waist level finder, interchangeable lenses, and aperture priority.
At this point, I also want to go with 645 format rather than 67 format.

This seems to be the best option, yes?

I personally find the 645 format to be too small to justify using it over 35mm. Recently sold my Pentax 645 for this reason. But if you’re into 645 and looking for a cheaper option i do recommend the Pentax.

Generally speaking, zoom lenses tend to be less sharp and slower, and prime lenses tend to be sharper and come with faster options. That's just generally speaking; there are plenty of good, sharp zooms with good speed, and there are some shit primes. A 70-200 zoom is a pretty good jack of all trades lens, and is useful in most situations. Being able to zoom gives you a lot of freedom in composition because you don't have to zoom with your feet, so that is the biggest advantage. Unless you're trying to get the sharpest possible photo, for some specific reason, a 70-200 will do you fine for most stuff a 50 prime would do

Mostly agree. For me the ultimate feature of 35mm is vibration reduction in lenses, it's soo nice, like delta 100 becomes iso 800 regarding camera shake.

What'd your experience with Cinestill 800t at night? I plan on bringing it with me for a night out in Mardi Gras with my friends and I hope it works out well. I suppose I'm going to focus on a shallow depth of field and low aperture on my min. X-700 50 f1.7

Never shot film before. Just bought this lot at auction, as-is untested for $75.

Hoping the Mamiya works so I can carry it day to day for snapshits. I wish it was the EE but whatever.

The FE working would be neat seeing as I've got F-mount lenses and have always been wanting something with a manual focusing screen. Everything is dusty but I'm guessing it's crumbling foam from inside the bag seeing as the finish on the FE looks quite good. Will post two follow-up screenshots.

Should I feed each one a roll of film to test? Anything else I should be looking out for?

How am I able to see the outline of the sun in this photo? It's subtle but there's an edge between the sky around the sun and the celestial body itself. Surely the sky immediately around the sun must be 10, 20, 50, ??? stops brighter than the building which is in shade, yet both are reproduced. Metered for the building so it's in zone 4 or 5.
This is a crop from 35mm Fomapan 100 so hardly the latitude king.
Density of the negative is good so it's not like it's a major pull or anything. Though it probably does mean I'm not developing the extreme highlights to maximum density that I could.

I've been doing this for about a year with good results. Just measure out 1/1.5m (24/36) of film plus a little extra for the leader, take one end, push it a tiny bit into a waiting donor cassette that's got about 1cm of film plus some tape sticking out, secure it down, then wind it in. I use some drawers as my 1m reference as it's of course in total darkness.

I've learned from indoor low lights haha. I'd be using a tripod and clicker, and yeah, New Orleans during MardiGras will have a lot of street lights, light signs like gas stores etc.

Doesn't feel that out there to me.
As long as it's in total darkness it's fine. Maybe there's a small risk of dust landing on the emulsion and making a spot where it won't get exposed properly, but I don't think I've seen that before.
Even if there is a teeny tiny amount of light leaking in, for slower speed film reciprocity failure should keep it safe from fogging.
It also has the advantage of not exposing the end of the film.

i only went to filmneverdie because they give high res scans for no extra cost, its really cheap. they have really great service and are super friendly. i only got my first few rolls developed last week and they helped me out, really nice people. i was going to go to hillvale but the price for high res scans threw me off. ill still buy film from them though

thanks! this one is a view of the city from that same place as before. had to rotate it slightly because i didnt take it straight. that time was a really nice sunset, got a bunch more photos, unfortunately the sun was too strong on some and washed out the photo

This is right. But even though you missed focus the wide aperture gives a soft look that kind of masks the missed focus and you learn to live with it. Note, this applies more to vintage lenses - a modern Leica 50 misfocused at f/50 looks much more obvious than an old sonnnar.

Adox CMS 20 II is out of stock but supposedly "on the way" at B&H in 35mm and 4x5. They still haven't brought it out in 120. They originally claimed they were having trouble getting the right backing paper or something, but it has been years.

just don't go on ebay and you can make great deals. i got an F3 for 30 bucks which I sold for 280. the lever and rewind button were stuck and I just dropped it off at a repair shop and had it fixed for 20 plus tax. also getting P&S for 10-20 a pop and selling them at 80-100 makes for a good side hustle really.

Who cares about BH, Adox is European stuff and were not running out. Its literally the cheapest 35mm stock here, even cheaper than anything by kentmere, and the shelves are full of it. 6,5 euros a roll babyy.

Just wish they made it in 120 but until then, pan f will have to do.

If the rewind release button is stuck the film will not advance. That's actually how you can do multiple exposures on those cameras, but it's supposed to pop back out after you cock the shutter.

Sorry, I'm thinking of the other A bodies. Either way (film rewind button or ME lever) those are parts I would check because if you can use the film advance level to cock the shutter but the film isn't advancing, then that's the most likely spot. If the film advance train was engaged then the film would advance or you would hit some kind of resistance on the lever.

I got a Bronica SQ-A with 2 lenses (150mm & 250mm) and two viewfinders (AE Prism Finder S and MF Finder S) for around 389 USD off Japanese yahoo auctions.

The seller had given the condition a D ranking which seemed to imply it was just barely usable. When i got it there was dust and smudges on the two lenses which was easily cleaned with a microfibre cloth and they now look like new. The protective glass on the MF Finder S was also dirty but after opening it up i was able to get it back to perfect condition. I guess i’m just very surprised the seller didn’t even bother to clean it before selling. The AE Finder S seems to work perfectly except that it has had another diopter installed making it blurry and unusable for me as someone who doesn’t wear glasses. The light meter in the MF Finder S doesn’t work and shows a constant overexposure. This was slightly disappointing but not a huge deal since I will use an external meter anyway.

All in all, I felt this was a pretty good deal considering some of the components on this camera now sell for $150 alone. Anyone else have experience buying from yahoo auctions? Seems like the sellers are way more honest since it’s aimed at the japanese market only.

I have the same question but I feel like there's nothing you can do after the fact. I had some 15 year old film developed recently and the B&W was ok but the color looked like crap, insanely grainy. The negatives were green and I could barely get any color out of them. Supposedly if you are shooting old film you shoot it 1 stop slower for every 10 years so you'd shoot a 10 year old roll of 200 at 100 speed.

then it's unfortunate and unlucky a better shot wasn't possible, oh well-- still not good. At least you got the opportunity but the sad reality it's half as good as it should be. I have shots I was unable to take at their maximum potential but I don't post them for critique because I know I took the shot after the moment passed or I wasn't at the optimal angle for the shot I wanted. Oh well that's life, it is what it is and theres no way to make those shots good.

I dunno the camera was in full auto. Supposedly its got some crazy "fuzzy logic" metering system. Pretty nice for a camera you can get on ebay for 20 bucks. The exif data is from the z6ii that I scanned the negative with.

that's what warming filters are for, had no time to stop and change setting or remove filters as I was driving. I left the little film camera on auto and left everything on it and held towards my passenger window as I looked forward. 2/7 of shots I took were unfortunately blurry foliage shots but I'm glad the majority are bretty gud.

I think you're confusing their E6 kits. They have a normal one, one for extended DR daylight balanced, and one that's tungsten balanced, i.e. turns a daylight slide film into a T balanced film since T balanced slides are long gone. I don't think the T balanced one gives you more DR, could be wrong on that.

I really want to try their E6 kits. If you lookup Lost America (night photography) he got his start shooting T balanced slides. I would love to replicate his original film look but in 120 format.

Eterna is not slide film? So why in the hell are those photos so yellow? Slide + warm filter would make sense but neg film? Should be very easy to correct. Especially a tungsten neg.

But fine, to answer your question depending on the filter it's either 5500-3400 or 5500-3200. If he used a 85B which makes the film 3200K, coupled with decade expired film and who knows what screen and there you go it probably looks too yellow for you. Go eat a bullet now.

Absolutely if your image editor does its calculations at the bit depth of the file. You can easily run into posterization and other artifacts at 8-bits.

That said, I think most modern programs do their calculations in 16-bit regardless of the file format, so it's much harder to find the difference. Still, you are throwing away information when you save in 8-bit.

It would be an easy introduction for them as they already manufacture a cheap 800 speed c41 film for use in disposable cameras that they can brand as Gold. Only issue is it's also what Lomography (likely) brands as their Lomo 800 film, so Kodak would be eating into Lomo's, and therefore their own, market.
tbqh the current deal where Kodak sells Lomo bulk rolls of what would be Gold 800 for zero marketing/easy distribution effort is probably preferable for them.

develop for the highlights means you will *not* develop for 400, because you'd be crushing the highlights then. You pull in dev. That is, if you shoot at 200, you dev for 200.

Reposted my question in the new thread but just wrap up some lose ends in here: I checked the rewind button - I was in fact depressed but getting it un-pressed didn't do the trick. I also checked the douple exposure lever - that one wasn't stuck aswell. So I think the fault here is internally. Gotta check it out.
