I laid it all out in a separate basket from the rest of my stuff (with my film cases opened, the less work and mystery they see, the more likely they become to say yes), that way they see what needs to be checked and just pick the basket up and give it back after the machine step
It usually took them about a minute at most to do the check
For the camera, I wasn't bothered as much with letting it go through the X-Ray machine, (it's only one roll + the camera gives it some shielding, maybe), but if there was sensitive film inside or they were already checking the rest (I'd lay it in the same basket), they'd usually check it in the same way then ask me to take a picture to make sure it's a camera and not a thing that looks like a camera
Wastes a frame, but it's fine
In a few places they were a bit surprised, I don't imagine people request it often, but they did it more often than not
If the place is crowded and I feel like I'd be bothering them I might just bite the bullet
When I went through China they absolutely refused any other way than the (more powerful than usual) X-Ray machine, and those fucks made it go through twice or thrice
But in the end it was fine, so whatever
Just ask nicely, it's free and they might just be ok with it
Pic related, how I presented them and how much I managed to get checked at once (In Japan)
