overblown highlights is very 'unnatural' to the eye, on contrary to underexposed pics which convey some sense of darkening and intimacy, not grittiness
even though modern digital cameras surpass their 35mm equivalents in iq in general, still they handle highlights, specially specular lights poorly compared to film (which handles shadows very poorly that doesn't look annoying)
