Gear DOES matter

...but not how you might think it does.

You can take good photos on a cheap camera, and bad photos on an expensive camera, and you can take a wide range of photos on any type of camera, but if you want to take a portrait of a person with a certain perspective and certain depth of field, then you need a portrait lens, like a 50mm f/1.4 or 85mm f/1.4. If you want to take effective sports photography, you'll need a little bit of reach on your lens, so a 24-70mm lens won't cut it--you need something like a 70-200mm lens. If you want to get the most out of sports photography, the camera body needs to meet certain demands for its burst rate, AF speed and even ISO noise.

Gearfags mostly focus on WHICH 70-200mm lens or which 50mm f/1.4 lens to buy, since they aren't all equal, but casualfags and poorfags miss the bigger picture that certain lenses and certain bodies are needed for certain types of photography. If you're cool not doing portraiture or sports photography, then feel free to make-do with your 24-70mm kit lens, but deep down, you know it's not enough.
