When I do it I make a 4:3 white canvas because I think it's the most pleasant aspect ration to look at. Then I scale it so the longer edge of the photo takes up 90% of the overall frame.
So for example, if my photo was uncropped, 3000x2000, I'd make the canvas 3333x2500.

always square borders regardless of the aspect ratio of my photo. it evens things out nicely. so in your example it would be #3

Well, acshually it can be a very nice thing if you're shooting black & white. But then you have to be consistent and it must be a full project. Similar to how you would make a photo book out of nice prints glued on thick, tasteful, subtly coloured paper.

4:3 is just the way to go to have your photos look nice on an iPad. There is no other logic behind it than that. Photos are supposed to be viewed on iPads, but a regular old 3:2 photo will have ugly black borders, and not everyone here is into M4/3.

There is no irony or 'post-irony' in this. There is nothing that works as well as an iPad to view photos. Even my boomer father knows that. Editing works a lot better with a keyboard and mouse, obviously, but purely to consume your photos, why would you bother with anything else?

No, printing does not work as well. Unless you have enough wall space in your home to fit 10000 12.9-inch photos, so around 500m2 of entirely unused walls if you don't frame them.

They're just stored away on a hard drive somewhere. Absolutely you should pick out all of your keepers, print them at size A3 or bigger, frame them and hang them on your wall. It's an entirely different (and better imo) experience to viewing them on a screen and you're constantly passing them and looking at them.
