I have an indoor portrait shoot coming up and will be using a film camera.

I am testing in my house and I am already down to shutter 1/80 only like a meter from the window(its a cloudy day) and want to use the whole room. How low a shutter speed can you get away with, with good technique?

I will be shooting at f2

maybe 1/60th, though it depends on the camera.
This is where lenses with built in stabalization become useful.
I use nikon lenses with VR when shooting with my f100 and it effectively gives me 2 extra stops.

Good point on VR, sadly my film camera lenses dont have that. I was planning to go hand held, maybe i do need to consider a tripod.
How dangerous is it for my model blurring from a tiny movement if I shoot at 1/50?

I can deeper in the room at 1/50

Why not use flash or some lighting then?

Not much else you can do unless you buy a faster lens or use a faster film (or push the film). Doing super slow shutter speeds is slightly risky for both camera shake or the model moving. If you shoot a wider angle lens (28 or 35 maybe) and do more environmental portraits you can probably shoot a bit slower though. Also you can shoot a few frames as insurance and hope one is sharp.

have you seen the cost of portra 800 lately?

One of the stores in Australia is selling it for $40 a roll... the others around $35

Or else I have to buy rolls of ebay for around $30-$35 with no expiry date listed.

Lomo 800 is cheaper than portra, but a pro would probably just use some diffused flash to bring in extra light.

Ill experiment tomorrow, I have an led light and a reflector, ill see if i can bounce something in from far away and have it look natural.

update in case anybody cares.
Using one of those cheap silver circle reflectors off ebay on a stand by the window I can reflect light to anywhere in the room and gain an entire stop of exposure. (on a cloudy day).

That gets my 1/80 on a cloudy dark in the far corner from the window. (iso 400)

And my LED light can boost it by 3 stops although now the light looks nothing like natural and looks like im using a strobe.

If it's that bright, couldn't you diffuse it by putting a sheet of some kind of semi-transparent material in front of it?

yeah i experimented with putting it way further back, bouncing it off walls, the reflector etc, if i had a way to hang a big sheet I could put it behind that. I just dont really have a way to do that. Prob would look decent though, make it more like window light.
