I watched their Z9 review, and thought that the Z9 was the coolest camera I've ever seen, but it didn't win me over with the idea that I had to go out and buy one.

I think people's honest thought, and usually those people are literal whos like you and I are the one's who I feel more consalidated with investing in gear.

At the end of the day, I couldn't give DPR any praise in helping me with my choices of gear, since like the other anon said that they're owned by Amazon. They're essentially paid to tell it like it is, randos aren't.

no, but I actually like photography and am not just looking for an excuse to feel good about consumerism as a hobby. A lot of hobbies are, for most people, excuses to buy things to get a dopamine release and waste time making sure they're buying the right thing. Gaming, musical instruments, photography and cooking are all examples of this.

No. I like gear reviews in the same way I like top gear or other product review videos. It's interesting to see what the latest developments are in the industry. I feel zero desire or need to upgrade from my current camera. It's called having an internal locus of control.

No. I'm using an old 2nd hand crop dslr which is good enough for me.
Watching good photographs do make me bit annoyed how boring my snaps are. But I know throwing gear at the problem would not help.

I dont think its deliberate. I think its a mutually beneficial coincidence. Reviewers get to make content about the things they are passionate about and retailers and camera companies make a few sales off people making impulse purchases. It's all up to you how you use the tools available to you. There is value in gear reviews. Are you going to fall for marketing and sieve out the shills or take advantage of the wealth of information to help you make an informed decision?

The last time I read one, on Dopey Review as it happens, it was clear that the reviewer had simply reviewed the spec sheet and sent his granny out for a sample snapshit.

Besides, I have the gear I need. On those rare occasions that something needs to be replaced I go to the shop to consider my options in person.

Gear reviews are pure kikery.
If you are not in the market for new gear then "staying on top of the news" is literally useless and only takes up mental energy.
If you are in the market for new gear then you just go to the various manufacturer's websites and browse what they have and then you rent the gear that interests you the most and you thoroughly test it.

my local camera gear shops lets me rent a Canon R5 for $60/day and the 28-70 for $40/day.
If I were in the market for a Canon flagship I could spend the equivalent of 3 working hours worth of money to thoroughly test the camera over a couple of days.
