What do I do if I dom't have an eye for what looks good? Every shot I take, it's all shit.

I have a camera that I studied settings through and through but I just do not have an eye for things. My girlfriend takes photos with her iphone that end up infinitely better than anything I have ever taken.

My question is - how did you learn to take good photos or see what will make a good photo? Any courses worth following?

Attached a shitty photo I took yesterday as I'm on holidays.

Before taking a picture, either go above or below your eye level. Move left and right, up and down. You will take different photos and eventually learn what works.

You can't learn it in a day - there are some tricks that help you learn faster, but these are for the details - the big picture stuff that transforms a normal image into a great photo takes time.

You can increase your chances of taking a great photo by:

thinking about the time of day you're shooting (really this is about light, but shooting early morning/dusk is an easy way to immediately upgrade your snapshits with good lighting)

thinking about what you're shooting in terms of image, not content (eg in the picture you posted theres some guy on a motorcycle in the background looking like he's having a breakdown, it totally disrupts the vibe of the image - if the photographer had thought about the image before hitting the shutter button, they probably would have noticed the man on the bike, and not included him)

Learn that a lot of the photos that people say are good are just 'right place right time pictures' they just show something that audiences and viewers havent seen before or seen very often. This means: go to weird places at weird times, look for the places weird people go

Look at photos and think about photos. dont just 'consume' ask yourself questions like what does the photo mean, what's the vibe of the photo, what kind of photo is it? What makes it work, what is the photo(grapher) trying to say? How could you have done it differently? Why do you like it? Why is it popular? etc.

There's 3 variables in digital photography (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) learn how different configurations affect the final image, and then ask questions about what effects they have on the final image (for example what kind of configuration creates the illusion of motion)

And finally, to make your photos more interesting, try using lenses that go extremely wide or extremely tele - this is really gimmicky but your pictures will get more interesting because of the distortion/compression (though over time I guarantee the novelty will wear off!)

Ask yourself what your photo should tell, fill the frame with the main subject, isolate the main subject and change camera angles till you are satisfied with the result. The photo you posted is not bad, but if you changed the angle by getting really close like for example framing a shot so that you captured how the monk looks up to the statue it would make a more interesting photo. Sorry for bad drawing skills

If you shot that strait on from a lower angle it would have been better

I suck too, my cope is I shoot hundreds of pictures every time I go out from wvery angle I can think of, then go home to sort them out, and hopefully i have a handful that I consider somewhat good.

I also like to go back and look at them a few days or weeks later because maybe I misjudged something

You do have an eye for what looks good. If you didn't, you wouldn't be able to recognize that your photos are shit. Don't officially study anything or anyone beyond the fundamentals. Forget photographers names. Become a student of pictures you like. Figure out what it is that you like about them. Framing, lighting, subject play, theme.

I can tell you why that picture you posted is bad though. Its a generic weekend family type shot. The kind that dad shoots on his disposable while the kids pull faces and he gets angry that he's already wasted two exposures. You've captured actors in a well rehearsed play prepared to have their passport shots taken. There is no unexpected candidness, no particular subject and no theme.

Also you will struggle so hard vs an iPhone for shooting ppl. The iPhone has so much in built processing specialised for shooting people and any girl who spends many hours browsing Insta and taking selfies of herself will subconsciously have picked up good framings and ways to add story to the photos.
These days it’s mainly about getting the story in, you know all those memes showing the guy photographing an object and the girl photographing the object with herself standing in front of it. The way the girls do it is currently the more popular way. You need to try to incorporate subject snd story (your bg and props) with the subject

Your photo is you just standing back photographing object, not well framed or lined up with bg.
You want to capture a vibe of you are in the story instead, sitting at the table with your food in front of you or standing talking to them from that perspective, anything that involves like you are putting the viewer into the story, not just seeing it from a distance

This was the exact framing that I was thinking when I saw the photo. Such a framing (if focal length allows) would emphasize the the size difference between the two subjects. There's the whole feel of a low angle creating powerful/towering figure too.

Go out and shoot. Look at shots that work and understand WHY they work. What lens was used - wide, long, stopped down or wide open? What light's were used - colour, direction, source(s)? What composition are they relying on - rule of thirds, centralised, radial, patterned? What is the photo communicating - motion, context, texture? Basically learn to understand why your photos look like shit.

Have you tried other art forms like making music or drawing? I found that I don't really care about pretentious photographer "artists", often those people are the actually talent-less ones who only care about the "perfect" shot (aka what other retards think) and not the contents and meaning of their pictures

For me taking pictures is more about documentation and making memories

You need to study principles and elements of design to understand composition. None of this is new. There are textbooks. You can also study other photographs, paintings, drawing, sculpture, acrhitecture, woodblock prints, etc. Some people have innate design/compositional skills; other people have to study them. What I think a lot of people stuggle with is trying too hard to represent an idea of the subject in a very static, documentarian way.

You think your shots are shit, but do you think about WHY your shots are shit? It's easy to look at your own shots and say "I don't like these," but it takes effort to put into words exactly what you don't like about them. Stuff like "I wish the light highlighted the subject more," or "it's not clear what I want the viewer to look at." Hell, even do the same for the good shots but in reverse - scroll through your favorites album and ask yourself what you did right. Most new photographers just scroll through their day's worth of shots skipping anything they don't immediately think is a masterpiece, but self critique is very important for improvement.

And make sure you're critiquing the photos through your own eyes, not through the eyes of somebody else. Ultimately it doesn't matter what us retards on /p/ say - instead of picking apart what you think people will or won't like about your shots, ask yourself why YOU don't like looking at them. You'll gradually develop your own style by figuring out what you like (or don't like) to look at.
