Camera tech crawled along with very rudimentary systems until the end of the 60s. Your big 2, Rollei and Leica were using 30s designs for the most part. The post war jap ripoffs are notoriously unreliable with inherent design flaws and the early slr era surrounding the F has a lot of junk bodies and shit lenses. The consumer point and shoots are also trash and the selenium meters are all dead or going to die just from use.

What you see in the 60s is more advanced machining and miniaturization of mature mechanisms and designs. What you see in the 70s is an arms race of more accurate electric shutters and auto exposure, self winding mechanisms, aerospace glass coatings, and computer aided lens design. All things have a service life and it isn't planned obsolescence so much as the nascent tech being unreliable and later iterations creating new shortcomings in a market where the primary consumers demand more and better as soon as it's available.

Also, the repair schematics weren't available to end users and have only recently surfaced on the internet. Compound that with the complexity that makes user end repair nearly impossible and how hard you'll bitch when you inevitably void the warranty trying something you aren't equipped to do in the slightest. I hate to say it but your whole premise is flawed.

Because in 10 years time, the technology in cameras will have far exceeded what you've babied for the past decade. Budget entry level options are now on par with mid-range offerings from 10 years ago that cost twice as much back then. Attainable mid-range bodies today destroy old flagships that cost double again or sometimes three times as much. You'd be foolish not to upgrade so why should manufacturers cater to longevity? Cameras are reliable enough to outlive their usefulness. These arent cars we're talking about. They're inexpensive tools that are subject to Moore's like laws. This isnt consumer mindset. This is just common sense.

As far as durability goes, there are still plenty of durable cameras. Olympus and Lumix are indestructible. Fuji has never lost it's durability as far as Im aware. The xpro3 with the new dura coating thing is probably one of their toughest modern cameras since the screen is tucked away pretty much always, which is the weakest part of any digital camera, sans sensor. Canon and Nikon have definitely lost their tank-like dslr invincibility and Sony's are probably less rugged but I've never used one to be honest. They're all probably good enough. What are you planning to do with your camera? Throw it of a cliff?

Anyway, due to inflation, cameras are cheaper now than ever so all this is a non issue. They only seem to be expensive because our wages haven't kept up with inflation. We are literal paupers compared to the wealth the boomers experienced.

Technology evolves and becomes better. To become better, it becomes more complex.

If you find the functions and image quality on 1950s cameras enough, then use 1950s cameras. Otherwise, either shit the fuck up or learn.

Mechanical cameras require spares sometimes, if you cant get one, you'll have to make one, and now youre in the same pickle as in a digital camera repair.

Meanwhile digital cameras might require board repair, which is actually pretty easy compared to sourcing a 50 year old spare without gutting another camera because electrical components are off the shelf parts.

So they're about on par with eachother, just two different types of repairs.

Survivorship bias. The cameras from the 1950s that still work fine today are the ones that were high end and built like tanks and/or babied.

E.g., that Nikon F in the op pic was released in 1959 for a price of $329. With inflation, that's around $3200 today. If you buy a $3200 camera today, it'll probably hold up pretty well, too.

If you actually spend a significant amount of time scrounging flea markets, thrift stores, and antique malls for old cameras, you'll quickly discover that while SOME old cameras that were well taken care of are still in great condition, there are just as many with gummed up and unusable shutters, corroded battery compartments, dead light meters, etc. And if you're looking at the old folding cameras, good luck finding one with an intact bellows and a shutter that'll fire, much less fire at the requested speed.

It's true that modern cameras are less repairable, but it's not because repairability has become unimportant to photographers; it's because other things have become more important to photographers and they're mutually exclusive. You can't have an all mechanical camera without sensitive electronics that also has the full set of autoexposure modes, autofocus, bracketing, motor drive, etc. If I have to choose between a camera where I'll definitely get the shot today and a camera where I'll probably miss the shot but where I'll still be able to miss the shot with it equally well in 20 years, I'm going to go with the former.
