Nikon D5600 starting to take photos like this

My Nikon D-5600 has started taking photos like picrel...

I should mention that I have just realized that the battery looks ever-so-slightly swollen, as if the faulty battery has sent too much charge which has then cooked something internally

WHAT is happening? If anyone has seen this before, any advice would be much appreciated

A faulty battery won't fry the internals. If it is swollen, you should absolutely replace it.
Have you tried using other SD cards?

starting to think that is false. In "live view" mode i am permanently stuck in movie-mode somehow with no way to exit, and aperture of 1/4000 even when changing the light environment

really starting to think the insides are cooked and its a write-off now unfortunately

Cool, wont bother with anymore advice then.
The insides could be cooked, but it wouldn't be from the battery. It could be stuck in live view and other issues, and have the insides actually be completely fine.

How many clicks did you put on it? Post the last image you took with it as a RIP to the old faithful. Here is one of the last pics I took on my pentax kr. Died not long after I got it. A fun couple months to send the old girl off.

I would try:
Full reset (turn off > on > hold "menu" & "info")
Leave battery out for a few minutes (def don't use a swollen battery)
Try different memory card (should always be formatting cards)

I used to do a lot of camera troubleshooting when I worked photo retail. Honestly, sometimes cameras just lock up for whatever reason (I've experienced it with every brand for sure), but most of the time, simply removing the battery for a second fixes most of them. It's definitely possible there is an actual electronic issue going on, at which point repair (or replace) are your options.

Just over 10k. I think it sat for years not being used. Only put about 500 clicks on it.

Get the battery out immediately. It's not going to send overcurrent into your camera but it may swell enough to get stuck and physically damage your camera.
(I posted this example before in a thread about 3rd party batteries.)

Its still taking glitched-out photos, albeit now more normal with single glitched-out lines running through an otherwise normal photo

I just took it to a camera repair shop. the guy said its the sensor, and it would have to be sent to Nikon (5 weeks+) to even get a quote

I also get the feeling that it may not be worth fixing, as its 4 years old now and will soon be old-tech

Bro looks like fucked up hardware.
Something in your camera is definitely messed up and likely beyond repair.

I need you to do two things.
They're very basic. One is free.

1. Try a different SD card.
2. Shoot RAW.
Set the camera to save RAW+JPEG.
Download and install Darktable.
https://www.darktable.org/
Open RAW in Darktable, see if is still fucked up. If it is, that could be a fucked sensor.

and if it isn't fucked up in Darktable, your camera might just be fucking up JPEGs. If your camera messes up JPEGs without fucking up RAWs then it is still a usable camera worth keeping.

If battery fails it will give less than rated voltage. That will screw up function and thats why in about everything digital there is hardware which detects undervoltage and puts it in safe state. Undervoltage while writing to nonvolatile memory can mess stored data.Have you tried to reset the camera to factory settings?
Anyway your photos look samish I got when I partially disattached a strip cable to sensor while IR modding a P&S. I'd bet for a sensor problem and not related to above.

Guys, you won't believe this - but the camera is shooting NORMAL PHOTOS again

Last night i played with the camera some more (after the camera repairman said it was a sensor hardware issue and needed to be sent to Nikon). At that time, it was taking only slightly glitched photos like picrel.

Then after some time (& tens of photos), it started to take 100% NORMAL photos again. I've taken about 100 last night over the course of two hours, charged the battery overnight, and taken a bunch this morning - and ALL are normal

This the strangest thing I have ever experienced

Does anyone have any idea what could have happened here? (I have no background in electronics, I am just throwing ideas at the wall)

- Did the faulty battery 'overload' the sensor with static electricity which took some time to dissipate?
- Was there dust on the sensor 'short-circuiting' ?
- Is it on its last legs and I need to prepare for the worst?

Anyway, thanks again to all for all your advice and help. I hope you have enjoyed the glitched photos

I had a point and shoot canon around 17 yrs ago, same photo output, lines on photo, wild colors all over the place. service center said sensor needs replacement so I didnt bother. also change your battery if you still plan on toying with it.

Possibly a temporary disconnection somewhere on circuit board or connector. Or some capacitor shorted for a while until current burned the short away. Or something else. Many things may go temporarily ping in such complex piece of electronics as a digital camera.

Your sensor looks fine, this looks like you have issues with power delivery to it or somewhere else in the camera. Likely the digital conversion where amplification (based on your ISO setting) gets applied during readout.

CMOS sensors like the one in this camera read out the sensor data in rows and you've clearly got inconsistent brightness rows in every one of your problematic images. Have you tried shooting RAW at all?

If I had to guess I'd say maybe you had a short or bad capacitor and the camera fixed itself. I wouldn't expect it to continue working without issue for long and if you have the option definitely get it serviced and show them the issues.

Just one last question: as it was hinted to me that replacing the sensor would not be worth it due to cost (vs just getting a new camera as it’s already 4 years old), would this kind of “power supply” issue be cheaper to fix than a sensor?

(I.e. even if the camera dies again, is this type of damage less of a “write-off” type of damage than a failed sensor?)

It should be. The issue could be something simple like a loose cable, bad capacitor, or some corrosion.
Since a D5600 is pretty cheap I'd just continue using it until it stops working then take a peek inside and look for signs of obvious damage then take it from there.
