there really hasn't been though, a complete lack of competition always leads to tech stagnation, the competition comes from the cameras as a whole so they throw in other useless features to compete while pumping out the same shit sensors since consumers are mindless retards, even film has had more advancement since the 90's than digital sensors have

these aren't even the same sensor tech though, also more megapickles don't count as improvement because just like all tech that was possbile from the beginning they just trickle the improvement over decades to squeeze more out of the consumer

the last of the ccd's dslr's were the Nikon d3000 and pentax 645d, in 2010, CMOS cameras already had live view but those two didn't.

People need to stop thinking that cmos and ccd are even that different optically because they are not. They both rely on the same silicon electronics and the same photoelectric effect physics. Cmos is very similar to ccd where it counts and is better on the point where they differ. At the photosite, they are the same. The only difference is with the readout mechanism. CCD uses a sort of electron bucket-brigade mechanism and CMOS has direct wires mediated by transistors. Seriously the only reason to use the ccd mechanism is if your fabrication technology is inadequate for anything better and that's exactly why it was used. The bucket brigade is really horrible because it introduces so much readout noise and signal contamination. It saves you the difficulty of having to fabricate transistors at every photosite and in the past where transistors were expensive that was reason enough to use CCD but with modern technology it's EASY to fabricate tens of millions of transistors. Everyone has a cellphone in their pocket nowadays that have billions of transistors in it. Making ~50M transistors is easy nowadays. CCDs have less wiring than CMOS too but, again, the cost of that additional wiring is inconsequential nowadays and the drawback of that extra wiring to optical performance was eliminated by using backside illumination.

How are you defining "significant improvement"?
>Sensors now have 100× the pixel count

>Readout is orders of magnitude faster
>Noise is orders of magnitude lower
>DR is many stops greater

You could say there's been no fundamental revolutions but clearly the iterative improvements have been very significant.

It depends on the image processing chip but yes, kinda. The first few generations of CMOS were undeniably shitty and why adoption of digital in professional spheres was so slow. You had to massage color out of raw files and the rendition of it wasn't the most accurate. The real difference is how CCD has a more film like noise and color rendition in low light, not accurate but pleasing to the eye.

I guess this is as good a place as any to ask. Why aren't there any video cameras with a mechanical shutter? It seems like it would get rid of rolling shutter on a CMOS sensor. Plus you would occasionally get kino flickering lens flares like you sometimes see in movies if the light bounces inside the camera just right.
