When will the film market crash?
I'm sick of every camera going up in prices and reaching thousands of dollars. I'm sick of paying double digits for rolls of film.
Will we just have to wait it out until it's not popular anymore, or can the crash be forced?

you should have bought cameras years ago, not right now. also right now theres still TOP quality cameras at frozen prices because goobers still havent found them. or because theyre too advanced for the pedestrian nigger to get them, bassically they get filtered.

just 6 years ago you could buy film lots of 40 mixed rolls on ebay for $15.

theres also still moving picture stock for somewhat cheap for what you get.

Film cameras are not simple machines whatsoever. Many film cameras have quite complex technology including autofocus systems, extremely precise shutters, custom through lens viewfinders, many moving mechanical parts, custom electronic circuitry for metering and displaying exposure info etc etc.

The film market will never fully crash as a minority of people will always want to shoot film and many professionals do want to still use film. It will come to a point where demand will far exceed supply making it again profitable to design and manufacture new film cameras. Film cameras are limited in longevity by their repairability. Once electronic film cameras from the 80s and 90s start to fail due to inevitable electronic failures, a huge hole will be left in the film camera market. Even if someone was to charge $3000 to make a brand new Contax T2 it would sell if there are few to no working used examples to buy. That is also not to mention that film cameras did not reach their peak technical and performance capabilities before their funding was cut off to instead design digital cameras. If someone was to come out with a new professional grade film camera with better optics, better autofocus better overall technical features, people would put their money down. Leica should really be developing new film cameras but they don't have a design team and haven't designed anything new in house for 30 years. Everything Leica sells now is simply rebranded products designed by other companies that Leica puts its name on and nothing else.

yeah so technology that any digital camera has yeah?
even so, most film cameras are just a box with a shutter in it and some mechanical parts to change shutter speed really not that complex to make once you have the knowledge

More and more old film cameras will break or wear out and no new ones are being created.
Also film is def gonna go up, all materials are getting fucked by inflation. Film is also so much more complicated to make than you realise, look up the Kodak factory on YouTube to see just how complex. Like 100 times harder than you could ever imagine involving so many massive complex machines.
It sucks because I like film but portra is already hitting 30-35 per roll in my country, 10 to develop. Won’t be long till it’s $50 to shoot and process one roll of film.

Zoomers aren't going to be nostalgic about film.

At this point professionals who use film do so because film automatically gathers attention from hipsters regardless of the quality of the work. It's easier to gain an audience working in a popular niche. That will fade in time as the nostalgia/hipster factor fades.

That's already happening. But you have to realize that the demand is against a tiny supply. So tiny that it's obvious Fuji doesn't even care, i.e. their films are profitable but not more profitable than other investment opportunities for their money. That's why they keep canceling film stocks

Yeah they did. Sure, a 1DX mark III has better AF than an EOS 3 or 1v. But the AF in those film cameras isn't holding anyone back.

I paid less for my Leica and it fits in my pocket and some of the Recorders listed cost more than the 15mm lens I put on mine. my whole pocketable 15mm setup cost about 400 with the finder on the top and it shoots 24x36 not pussy half frame

And what's the point of an expensive film camera anyways?
The emulsion takes the photo, the camera is just a lens holder. In my mind, as long as you can change the lens and exposure, the camera did it's job.
I'll agree on the price for rolls, but cameras aren't really the problem.

The problem is the price point. Sure, you could make a functional camera which takes OK quality photos. People have, just look at the Ilford ones. They're only a step up from disposables though.

Once you're into the region of decent feature-rich SLRs though? The second hand market is still way cheaper than what you'd be able to develop and manufacture one for. Remember that it's a niche market too, you'll not be able to recoupe development costs by selling millions of units like back when film was still popular.

It will probably happen at some point in the future, second hand cameras are only getting older and good luck finding replacement parts for them.

Because they’re pretty rare and they never really caught on outside of japan sadly. The recorder is pretty sturdy tho which makes it a great everyday carry well worth the prices imo

Whether you like to admit it or not, its now a niche market. Anything vintage comes with a price tag.
You want cheap then go digital, you want vintage and niche then you pay. That situation wont change, unless there is some kind of revolution in the materials or way that film is created. If anything, without said revolutionary change, film will likely continue to go up in price

I didn't know they sold bulk rolls of Gold. I've only seen Ektachrome and the Vision3 cinema film being sold in bulk lengths. You can also get 100ft of Vision3 film from resellers but buying the 400ft roll from Kodak is a much better deal.

I suspect that poster took bulk loading to mean buying individual rolls in bulk. You can't get bulk rolls of Gold unless you're Lomography and can buy a hundred 1000ft rolls at a time. Certainly not bulk gold in 120 format.
Take the Vision3 pill anon. It means home developing (unless you have a specialist lab within living or posting distance) but it's basically Portra-tier or better for less than the price of Gold.
Where have you seed Ektachrome sold in bulk? Do you mean 8mm motion picture?

Yeah that's probably what he meant. Kodak's motion picture supply department sells Ektachrome in 400' reels, and 1000' reels as well. in 35mm. They also sell it in 70mm for IMAX. And it doesn't have remjet so that would be normal process E-6.

I want to buy some Vision3 and use it to push multiple stops. I've seen it look good enough underexposed by multiple stops so it could be a good do-everything film.

tell me what this is, then, dummy. Why would I lie about something like that? You can order 400ft or 1000ft from Kodak's motion picture department. At least, it's in their catalog. I haven't tried calling them but I'm pretty sure you can do it.

yeah hopefully he's got the cash to buy it, I would love to see anon buy 400ft of Ektachrome. Although honestly if/when I do bulk color film I'm definitely gonna go for Vision3. It seems like it has really good exposure latitude with people shooting it at 3200 and getting good results. No pushing, to be clear.

A color film I can shoot at 3200 for use with a telephoto lens in changing light conditions, for like $6 a roll or less? Don't mind if I do. I'm planning to start bulk rolling b&w first to get the hang of it.

I love film and kept shooting it next to digital but it got so expensive it's not worth it.

The market will change when the nostalgia phase of film and film cameras ends. It's the same as what something like the Ford Model-T went through: people remembered their fathers had one, decided as adults they could afford it and wanted to restore one, it became popular, they went up in price, eventually all the people of this era passed away and newer generations with no memory of the Model-T didn't care about them and let them rot. The remaining few maintained their value as museum pieces, destined never to go down in value barring a civilization collapse.
Frankly, you missed the opportunity to fill your freezer with cheap film and snap up the best of the classic film cameras. You can expect new film to be expensive, repurposed crap (eg. shitty remjet film stocks) and any new cameras to be ultra-expensive playthings for the very wealthy.

Why are you typing like this? You come off as a bit crazed. Vision3 seems to be really good in a wide range of lighting conditions and is pretty nicely fine grained, and the most important part is that if you bulk roll it, it's the cheapest film per roll you can buy. Gold doesn't beat it, nor does Color Plus.

If color film were actually available, which is basically isn't, then I wouldn't even care about cinema film. I'd just get Gold at the store for $5 a roll and be done with it. You seem a bit crazed as well. We're all OK in this thread. I'm not gonna stop you from shooting Gold if you can even find it. I fucking can't unless I'm willing to get price gouged by some merchant.

I did stock up on like 20 rolls of Superia 400 though when they were on sale at the pharmacy. They haven't restocked since.

I like both, though. Comfy photos and maybe something more realistic, but honestly, I'm only really interested in cinema film for two reasons:
1. Potentially usable at pretty high speeds
2. Bulk rolling for film that's $6 a roll.

And a smaller reason is relatively fine grain. I've started shooting with a 300mm telephoto for birds and stuff and I have to raise my shutter speeds for that. That, combined with low light, makes the prospect of a film I can shoot at maybe 1600 or even 3200 if I really wanted to, a very attractive one.

I haven't yet used Vision3 so I'm not in any honeymoon phase with it, I'm just interested in bulk rolling to save money and then something that's good at high speeds.
