They weren't "good" enough to make a decent 4x5 print until around 2006 and the 8x10 game was lacking so there's a lasting stigma. 1" or smaller sensors and slow lenses with mediocre image quality added to the issue. I'd say bridge cameras were more generally reviled due to similar issues and a price approaching or exceeding that of DSLRs.
The "hate" for point and shoots after that was more that they don't meet meet quality standards or have the controls and features to produce a standard of work that has remained relatively consistent since the 60s.
