Most photographers that travel love that third world shit makes them feel like they're bringing awareness to "the real issues and shit" you your self live in it you should be able to capture your people living life with what they have
You will get harassed by some thugs at some point just say some artsy shit about capturing the essence of your people or whatever and let them know you're no snitch if they say no well then leave. Go somewhere else
Go out to your town interact with the place ask people that are doing interesting things if you can take their photo if you got money give them a couple dollars or cigs before you know it nobody is going to give a shit if they see you around taking photos
If you're afraid of getting robbed you can go out with a friend, make your camera look cheap or damaged with some tape
