It's pretty funny that it's such a common sentiment in photography because photography is one of the few "art" forms (if you want to call it that) where gear DOES matter.
I guess it's because people try and legitimise photography as a proper art form so they try and make the claim that it's more about skill than gear.
Skill is important but if your camera can't set shutter speed, good luck photographing anything that moves
if you are using a cheap digicam or phone camera then you have no depth of field control
if your camera comes fixed with a wide angle lens you will not be able to make the moon look as cool as it does in real life

by using a phone or cheap point and shoot you are extremely limited in what you can photograph
an old cheap slr should be the baseline for your general photographer, you won't be limited by an slr with interchangeable lenses

Partially because the ones saying "gear doesn't matter" are the ones who previously thought it mattered, dropped the money on flagships, and didn't see their photos get any better. When I first started shooting I used an old digital point-and-shoot for my first year. Now that I've upgraded to a full-frame body, it doesn't make my photos quantitatively better. The beauty of modern photographic technology is the limitation of mistakes; autofocus, auto exposure, and fast EVFs mean that you're less worried about the technical aspects of photography. Better image quality and color science are nice, but they aren't what make a good photograph. It all comes down to timing, lighting, and composition.

Except controlling depth of field is a serious meme 9 times out of 10. Most times where it's a make or break for a photograph, deeper depth of field is actually what's necessary which cheap gear does no problem.

Most people here are snapshitters and are constantly worried about ‚gear‘ and being ‚talented‘.
A good photographer can get something pleasing to look at put of any camera put in their hands. The best camera is always the one you have with you. It doesn‘t matter what camera you use as long as you are having fun. This is not a competition, you do you. Just enjoy photography, don‘t feel pressured to buy shit you don‘t need. Just have fun.

the amount of times I've missed on good shots because I only had my phone with me is too high for me to keep count already. Happened today at the blue hour and has happened countless times before. You get a show of perfect light at the perfect site and can't come even close to making use of it because all you have is some 28mm with no dynamic range.

I am literally shooting with a 550d and kit lens I "borrowed" from my parents, also sometimes with a phone when I am too lazy to carry the camera.
For me it's about aesthetics, a message, a vibe and not technical quality. The only reason why I would buy a new camera is because the 550D makes me look like a tourist
