It should only have ruined a handful of shots right? I just shot the roll to film test a camera, so as long as there's a few shots that show something I'll be happy
Also, any other stupid beginner mistakes I should look out for?

Forgetting to change iso is super common. I loaded film backwards for the first time after shooting film for like 14 years but that only applies to MF.

I should really get into home development, using a lab for the first time and while I'm happy with the prices and all it takes almost 2 weeks to develop. Previously I used a local store that does 1 hour development and scan but with slightly higher prices so it's not optimal for developing in bulk.

anyone have any experience with Benzotriazole for film anti fogging?

I found mystery film from decades ago and shot it in a disposable camera with flash, I hoped to get some kind of image, but worried about the huge basefog. I put 7 drops 1%benzotriazole to control fog and stand developed in 1:100 rodinal.

It had very little base fog (good) but the vast majority of images are like a Rorschach test of whatever limited sensitivity the film had left.

I could get better results with conventional (non-stand, higher concentration) development, but I would have to know what film it is that I am even shooting.

Weirdly there are no edgecodes (the film was bulk loaded) Is there anyway I can find out what film it is?

It poured off purple (maybe anti halation layer) when I dumped the developer.

if 1 liter of prepared C-41 developer works for 20 rolls, do 500ml work for 10 rolls? or is that some stupid ass logic I'm having here?
Found a dude selling C-41 dev kits around here but the developer comes in already prepared 1 liter bottle at shipping time and only lasts a little bit over a month before oxidising. I shoot at most 3-4 color rolls a month so for the price of the kit it's totally not worth it.
I'm wondering if there's a way to extend the developer life, like getting the dev in concentrated form and just mix around 350ml every now and then as I just dev a single roll 95% of times.

Yes. Honestly, the only reason to choose Leica over a Bessa is because you want a Leica. Bessas are fantastic cameras. I currently own an R2 and R4M and have also owned an R3A and R4A. Metal construction, m-moumt bodies with built in meters, metal shutters, and stellar viewfinders? Fuck yea.

The Bessa R2 is a great camera. Probably the closest you'll get to the M6 and prior Leicas without having to pay through the nose. The shutter is noticeably louder as it is metal instead of cloth like the Leica, and the rubber grip may begin to peel off very slightly at the back, but otherwise it's an excellent rangefinder.

Online stores I find have the cheapest prices, in the UK I usually buy from Analogue Wonderland and if you want cheap film to get into the medium I started off with B&W Fomapan which goes for like £4-5 a roll.

Curently i use a truste OM-1 with the classic Zuiko 50/1.8
It's trusty, light and you can do whatever you can with it

Nowhere is really cheap anymore, the best I could do was like the Fuji 200 3 packs for $30. $10 a roll is about the best I can find at the moment.

I'm probably going to start bulk rolling cinema film because of this, but not until I have the equipment for color developing. I'm planning to get mylar pouches to store the chemicals and a bulk roller.

If you ever use an electronic flash, make sure to set your shutter speed to 60 (or whatever the non-rolling shutter speed is on your camera). Since the higher shutter speeds on most cameras use a rolling shutter, the flash will only illuminate part of the frame and you'll end up with partial pictures. I once shot a whole roll of film that way and all of the pictures were unusable

I once opened the back in the same way as you but because of the superior anti-halation layer of Kodak® Vision3™ film, it was actually totally fine. The AH layer plus the tension the film was under meant nothing but the sprocket holes actually got exposed.

Nope. But they do make non perforated 16mm stock, which the Film Photography Project perforates. All Kodak motion picture stocks are available from them in double 8.

Santarae people are fucking retarded. They purchased the (apparently unique rather than repacked fuji/kodak/etc) 1000 emulsion from Tasma in Russia, and then made an asshurt spectacle over the current conflict.
Proceeded to (allegedly) donate proceeds from current stock to ukraine, and whine about having no new stock because they burnt bridges with the only supplier of this unique film.

A very similar thing happened with Film Washi, who were buying most of their products from Russia and reselling them to hipsters at hipster prices.

It would have been so easy to say "under the circumstances it is difficult for us to do business in Russia so these products are going to be unavailable for now" but no, they had to make a scene about le ebil orcs attacking the noble ukraine heroes and "regime change in Russia" be surprised that business is not going to resume.

It makes me wonder what will happen when The marveloids get pissed off with China--There aren't many products only made in Russia, but China on the other hand...lmao good luck replacing even half that shit.

Yes, they are really nice if basic slrs - I have MTL5 and I love it. Pentacon film loading system is great, I really don't know why they didn't put in into their electric (BMS and other) cameras.

The current tiktok generation doesn't care about the results, it's all about the "vibe" surrounding a certain activity and it's all superficial with no depth. What matters is the feel of doing something, but they don't really care about anything more complex than just using the automatic setting and taking random Instagram photos with some Lightroom preset to whoo the average social media retard.
That's why you see people buying expensive gear, and parading it for likes or attention, but you never see the resulting photos.
I know people that have spent thousands upon thousands on very expensive cameras just to take videos or photos of themselves holding those cameras for show and to appear artsy.

I'm fairly old, I've lived through my share of fads. Back in my day there was a fishing fad, you would see people standing at a lake shore just discussing their gear but they never caught a fish.
Photography is like that for 99% of the people that claim to do it.

Finally got my first coloured film developed, most photos survived the accidental opening of the camera without the film completely rolled back up. im satisfied.

You do know the mirror has absolutely nothing to do with the actual photo right, it's just there to reflect the light up into the viewfinder for you to see and it flips up once you release the shutter to allow said light to then expose the film, you do know that's how an SLR works, right?

My understanding from reading the documentation from the flashbulb packaging and a few other places is that with X-sync (instant) only 1/30 or slower will work (because the bulb takes 1/15 sec to reach peak illumination). I know that Focal plane shutter cameras have a max flash sync speed (usually 1/125 for 35mm), but will the camera sync *SLOWER* than that?

I don't have that camera on hand to see if it completes the circuit when other speeds are used.

That's what I thought, but after consulting the packaging of like 3 different manufacturers of flashcubes apparently these were considered compatible with x-sync provided that 1/30 was the slowest speed.

Less concerned about ambient light (it's going to be 200 speed film in dark restaurant type setting) more concerned about bulb related issues.

Depends of your budget.
Beercan is a legend, but 80-200mm 2.8 Apo G is better. Like all G lenses.
28mm 2.8 is pretty solid.
35-80mm 4-5.6 (3rd version) is cheap af but provides very good results.
If you shoots portraits a lot, check 135mm STF.

Do not buy Power zoom lenses, they aren't good and drying butteries really fast.

I had a beercan and found it quite good for 35mm but when I mounted it on my Sony for digital it was pretty bad everywhere. And vice versa for the 35-105 3.5-4.5 gen 1. It was not great on the 35mm film camera but was amazing for digital. Not sure why.

The Minolta 50 2.8 RS Macro is really damn sharp and works great for 1:1 macro and on digital and film equally. I find that pretty cheap too compared to other options. It's screw drive so should work on your camera. The rest I have are SAM or SSM digital lenses that won't work on older film cams, just the Alpha 7.

Do a test of all the shutter speeds. Start at the fastest with the lens aperture open and then adjust both by one stop. The idea being that every shot should have exactly the same exposure. e.g. 1/1000 f/2 and 1/125 f/5.6 will give the film the same overall light so should look identical on the negative. If there's any variation it means that SS isn't firing correctly.
Other than that check the self timer works and test the light meter (if it has one) against another camera with the same aperture setting.

Personally I take more shots at 50-ish mm than wide angles when out hiking. Wide fov is good for the 'money shot' on top of a mountain but is more difficult to get a good composition from than a 50mm where I can just pick out a subject.

yeah agreed about going tighter too. i think the 28mm was just better for that particular area but a lot of my other wide shots aren't really anything special since there's too much in the frame. it's a better focal length when you're up close but i'll be pretty far away from things on the trail. i also have a 50mm f2 that i think i might bring instead then, more for the low light capability than anything over the 40mm, though it is a little bit heavier.

-XRAY 4x5* test, last plate now i have to cut more (fuck)
-homemade lens from optical elements. looks much more "alive" than in the ground glass, enjoying its character.
-4x5* intended, in fact it was leftover plate 9x9, which im liking a lot and will create more of those for future shooting.
-messed with the tonality and im guessing somehow the color aberrations are coded into the monochrome film (sp oof areas) so i got pseudocolor thats plausible to the eye, pretty cool

Ive got the og gw690. Solid camera. Relatively portable. Great for hiking as it isnt as heavy as a p6x7. Its large though. Like comically large. Fixed lens maybe be a pro or con depending how you see it. But its an above average lens. Dont forget to remove the lens cap when shooting because you only get 8 total shots on a roll of 120.

You're probably just not scanning well enough to justify it if you think there's any other sane way to print colour.
I was concerned when I first got it that it might not hold up compared to top tier printers, but reality is the only thing that changes are the inksets and the size. Ink is so much easier and cheaper and brighter than pigment, and the sharpness is as good as anything else.

In SLR's only the viewfinder image is affected by the condition of the mirror. The only exception I can think of to this is the "SLT" which uses a fixed semi translucent mirror to make the camera quieter/ faster/ shake less. The only one of these I've ever come across is my fathers Canon EOS RT which he used for motorsports.

It depends on what you want to shoot desu. I'd only start with a rangefinder if you really wanted to do street photography.
I'd start with a compact that has flash and then go onto a fully manual SLR if you want to have more creative control and learn the most.
I think for first cameras you should choose something that is either versatile in form or function. The problem with the rangefinders you mentioned is they aren't really pocketable like a compact and you cant change the lenses.
I have an Olympus 35 SP rangefinder and I always end up picking up an OM-1 instead.

Lean towards a darker exposure. Slide film has some latitude towards underexposure, but almost none for overexposure. If you're getting say 6 different readings across the scene, from 1/30 to 1/2000 pick maybe 1/500. The very darkest areas will get a bit muddy but the alternative is stark white skies.
Honestly slide film isn't as bad as people sometimes make out. You just have to be careful with your metering and can't rely on overexposure being a fallback plan.

But seriously I would be appalled that a lab would have the nerve to send me back a scan that looked like THAT, like the other one you posted. Very shoddy work, and yes, I wouldn't go back to them again.

These days I have a flatbed scanner so to save money I just ask for development and then scan at home. But it's almost not worth it with the time I have to spend scanning anyway.

I've been shooting on my moms old zenit, she also gave me a panagor zoom lens. thing is, the little pin that you can see in the pic is loose, doesn't feel like there is a spring pressing it like on the helios the camera has. I've been shooting some photos on it and just now realized this, have I been fucking up and will the photos come out like shit ? How important is this pin for the camera operation ?
Also, when I move the aperture on the lens, unlike the helios I can't see the aperture blades inside the lens move, is that also not working all this time or does it work differently because it is a zoom lens ?

That pin is what the camera uses to open and close the aperture. Idea is the lens is wide open when composing and focusing, and only stops down the moment you press the shutter.
At least with the one example I have, M42 mount lenses stay open when the pin is not depressed. If you set the aperture to f/22 do the blades come out when you press the pin? If not, then the lens is stuck at f/3.5 permanently and any shots you took intended to be stopped down will be overexposed.

Yes, any lens hood that is too long for the FoV will show up in the frame. If you search for 'wide angle rubber lens hood' that's the sort I use on my 24mm.

Sure. This is a shot I took on Provia facing towards the sun and a relatively dark mountain. Metered slightly towards the sky. The detail in the clouds is reasonable but the darker bits of land like behind the rock are lacking definition. The valley is the same though haze and flare will be contributing as well.

Depends on what you mean. Black and white uses different chemicals than color.

I just used Caffeinol to develope my first roll of B&w. It would not work on color.

I would look up one of the ample YouTube videos on developing. Or what you need for either b&w or color if you're serious about doing it yourself.

Keep it that way. You should develop your first roll that has cherished moments with D76 like a normal person, not with an experimental process.

I think you were asking if BW can be universal, and if C41 chemicals are universal too for color neg film. Yes they are. D76 can dev most if not all BW with proper results. It can dev color film too, but it will come out in BW. Different BW devvers and techniques will give you different contrast, grain quality, etc. Those chemicals are very flexible because they all make a similar thing, which is soften film emulsion, peel layers then reharden film ie. BW paper developer can develop BW film, paper developer for color can develop color film (not optimal, but it works).

Anyone know of any film camera repair shops in Australia? I repair my own gear, mostly due to low budget I'd buy repairable lenses and cameras and built up my own experience. So I applied to work at a local stores repair section and they were impressed enough to hire me.

Otherwise if you're a photographer you can apply to work for marketing/sales or something similar like that.

Took this at night in SF. The city is so damn photogenic during day and night. I would say it’s one of the prettiest in the USA. Surprised since I had heard it was dirty and infested with homeless, and while true in some cases, it wasn’t as bad as hyped desu.
