Also why is film photography in black and white the most timeless and powerful form of photography?

I used to shoot with this all the time.
This is a shit crop from my SM.
I snapped this pic of a pet cemetery in South Lake Tahoe. Sadly the Angora fire in 2007 burned everything in this area a few months later. As far as I know these might be the only pictures of these fur babies resting place. Makes me really miss my doggo Dave. I hope your furring up Heaven Dave. You’re missed everyday.

I always push mine between 1600 and 6400 ISO.
6400 is mostly for when I'm going to be shooting with a minimum aperture of 2.8, but it looks great processed in D-76
3200 is amazing when you need light, it introduces haze around harsh light sources, and the contrast is really striking.
1600 is the best all around for me, strong contrast, manageable yet noticeable grain, super-versatile, I love it.

Only slightly pushed to 800 here (and yes, I have shot it at 400, it's good there too, but a bit bland I find, if I wanted to shoot black and white at 400, I'd get HP5+)

Because sometimes you've only got one camera with you, and one roll of film can last a week or more.
So you get higher ISO film to be ready both indoors and outdoors, daytime and night time.

you could also want to push your film to get more visible grain and contrast, so it could just be stylistic

I think I'm confused. Isn't 400tx a 400 ISO film? When you say you shoot it at 1600 wouldn't that be a camera setting? I'm sorry if I'm retarded, I'm coming from taking snapshits on digital.

On digital cameras it's a setting you change. On film cameras the ISO speed is baked into the film you're using. If you exposed 400 speed film as if it were 1600 speed film, it would be like under exposing by 2 stops.

Contrast and shadow detail are the main things.
There's a limit to how little a film can record before it starts to lose detail. Deliberately underexposing a film (ex. shooting a 100iso film at 400) puts more of the scene into the darker zones. Overdeveloping can bring these shadows out a little but not by much. A true 400iso film reacts more easily to the smaller amount of light received and will give you better definition in the shadows.
You get more contrast when pushing a film in development because highlights develop faster than shadows. So with more time in development the gap between the ranges of density on the negative gets bigger, so you get a larger contrast. High contrast can be a desirable look but not always, and definitely not always at the expense of lost shadow detail.

Underexposing and overdeveloping is a time-tested way to get more contrast.
Another way would be to use a more active developer for less time, so the shadows don't build up as much.
Or just use a naturally higher-contrast film.
