I am very confused about buying a camera, I don't know whether to go DSLR or Mirrorless.

I am really falling for the DSLR is dead meme and I would otherwise not care buying a much cheaper old DSLR but when I am spending an amount where I could potentially get a mirrorless it has me worried. It would also seem to me that the EF-M mount seems dead but I would just be adapting my EF/EF-S lenses anyways.

DSLR is not dead, Canon just recently released the T8i. Even if it was dead, the very best advantage is the OVF (has ups and downs) and battery life.

If you shoot stills only and develop your RAWs then a DSLR is the best choice unless you want eye tracking auto focus. I use the center focus point with spot metering then recompose. For 1k you can get a T7 with a 24mm prime, a 50mm prime, and a 55-250. If you shoot video then the m50 with like 10 extra batteries and install magic lantern.

You could wait, could be some years or several. If you really need video, moreso than stills, then get mirrorless for the latest codecs but it will have to be a sony or some other brand.

I actually bought the T7 a week ago for 590 CAD after tax, but after doing more research instantly regretted it and then returned it after I found a used T7i for for 849.99 with that 18-135mm STM lens I wanted (which I was planning on buying anyways so it basically comes to the same price for the T7I) which itself even used is like an extra 200-250 CAD. I already have a 55-250mm and the only others ones I would want are those you recommended which are the 24mm and 50mm. I have not shot video before but kind of wanted to get into it/at least have the ability to. I know mirrorless/the M50 will be better for this but most likely not leaps and bounds better. I know the battery life on mirrorless cameras is apparently quite awful but I would not mind carrying around an extra battery or two but if you need to be carrying more than that I don't know.

I prefer mirrorless, but if you don’t mind using a DSLR it’s the best IQ for your money. Buy the bodies and lenses that pro photographers are currently dumping. Don’t bother with crop, it’s not actually cheaper if you take noise performance into account.

For video the T7i is the more sensible choice, get a battery grip (use canon batteries) and you might get a very decent run time. You might not get the latest codecs and video shit with your T7i but prime lenses will make your footage look good.

Yeah, I think you are right. I am buying too much into DSLR is dead meme and for someone who has not done much if any video at all I doubt the difference will matter in the long run and when it does then I can upgrade. Worst case scenario can always still flip this T7i body for at least 550-600 bucks, keep the lenses and buy a m50 or other Canon mirrorless when it comes on sale without taking much of a hit.

Yep, you should invest in your skills (as in getting gud at editing) instead of gear. You have some serious advantages if you use the prime lenses even if you don't have the latest tech like in the sonys or lumix.

My gut is still telling me to consider the m50 mk2 but, at 889+tax plus an adapter for EF/EF-S going to be looking at 1000 CAD after tax. Then If I want to buy the 18-135mm which I like this lens going to cost another at least 200-250 CAD used. Then add in a 24mm and 50mm that's going to be like 250-300~ used for both and even more new. So to get the lenses I want with the M50 it will be around 1500-1600 CAD. Where as with the T7i it will be around 1200 bucks to have the 18-135mm, 55-250mm, 50mm, 24mm. Been stressing for the past like two weeks on what camera to buy, returning stuff dozens of marketplace adds responded to and I think I just need to get a decent camera in my hands and go take pics/learn how to do video at the end of the day mirrorless or DSLR doesn't matter.

Your current skill level has to be coherent with the gear you use. If you think you must have 4k and hd120fps then get the m50 mk2 and one lens, then you save up for the rest. If you know how to edit raw and colour grade then get another brand.

Last year I submitted an entry for a film festival, only phone videos were allowed. You can make a ton of shit with just an iphone.

That's what I thought too, but it turns out to be a false economy.

For the same aperture, ISO and shutter speed you get an extra stop of depth of field control and an extra stop less noise when you shoot on full frame. Yet FF lenses only cost on average one stop more, so it's a net zero difference in cost.

What's more, the brightest zooms on crop are f2.8 and primes are rarely brighter than f1.4. But on FF you're not limited to f4 zooms and f2 primes, you can go a full stop brighter or more. Unless there's a particular feature you can only get with a particular crop camera, you're needlessly limiting your options without saving any money in return.

Well the 4k on all these entry level cameras seems severely gimped with that insane 2.6x crop. I am sure you could use it in certain situations but seems more like something to buff the stats of a camera up/sell a feature. I would still not mind having it. I don't even know how useful 720p 120fps would be, sure you could do nice slowmo but I think the res would be noticeable. I don't even know if I will like taking videos like I do photos as well so don't even know if it's worth going to the m50. I also don't know if I will like the whole EFV thing, I guess it's cool seeing how your photo will look exposure wise/settings wise before it's taken.

How much better is the 80d? I know weather sealing is nice and all but objectively in terms of photos/videos? I can still cancel my T7i order and I have found a 80d for 729 CAD but it's body only so I would still have to go out and buy that 18-135mm lens I want which will bring it to basically the same price as the T7i which I don't mind that much.

The body is more than adequate for whatever you'll be doing with it over the next several years, the most important part is the lenses now. You said you've got some lenses, great. That 55-250mm STM is considered one of the best budget lenses available for Canon right now. Very sharp lens, fast and silent focus motor.

the 18-135 is also a good lens, with LOTS of utility. After you get your camera in hand and start shooting, you may want more lenses, awesome. You can look for the 50mm f1.8 STM. Incredible value to performance, and you can find them new for as low as $120 if you keep an eye out. I got mine from BestBuy's Canadian site for $119 all in. You can also find the EF-S 24mm used all over Canada for about $120.

So once again, stop freaking out. The camera you chose is totally fine. You do not NEED a full frame camera, you do not NEED a mirrorless camera. The T7i is a competent beginner/advanced beginner camera.

I just want a camera in my hands already, the 80d looks pretty nice and the weather sealing seems kind of cool as well as the bigger battery. But finding the 18-135mm for a decent price seems hard and I would probably have to go drive somewhere out of the way locally buying it used which will be a pain in the ass and buying it online will be too expensive after import fees etc. The T7i is going to come with it, so maybe it's worth it in that regard. Between the m50, 80d and t7i don't know which one to pick, I might just close all my tabs of websites and research and just wait until my T7i comes and hope for the best but this 80d now is making me question it.

Again, stop fussing. You've got consoomer brain. That T7i and your lesnes will be great, by the time you honestly need to upgrade that 80D body will go down to 4-500 CAD used. Both cameras have essentially the same features. They're the same where it counts. Lenses over body, every time. Stick with the T7i.

I know, my need to consoom is becoming insatiable. I also have just seen that the 80d is not really truly weather sealed just weather resistance and the real weather sealing is reserved for the high end cameras so maybe it's not as good but probably better than nothing. Although I shot my old T5 in the snow, light rain and other weather and never really ran into any problems and I didn't even use a plastic rain bag for the camera which I ordered for my T7i beforehand in preparation.

Ok, ok. So you said you wanted to also shoot video right? well the T7i legit has something over the 80d in this respect. It has digital video stabilization. The 80d does not. As for pictures, both cameras have the same sensor and processor, so the 80d will give you the same photos anyway.

Also a weather sealed body is kind of a wet fart feature unless your lenses are also sealed.

I shoot on an old rebel T1i, and the only reason I even want a newer body is for a more modern AF system. Other than that I am totally happy with my camera. Just get your camera in hand and fucking take picture, man.
