I used C1 for years, then only recently got into video and the node-based approach to grading in Resolve changed how I used C1. I rarely make use of merge nodes though, and still pretty new to node-based editing.
I used to do basically everything on the "background" layer, and then only go into layers only for things like cleaning up with the healing brush or teeth whitening.
Now I use "background" to get a base, and then have separate layers for color, contrast, etc. Can fine-tune these all by opacity, different masking options, can can make multiple different adjustments per layer. Huge fan of C1's totally customizable UI too.
Did this for some headshots yesterday, and since I could copy / paste all the layers, the only fine-tuning I really had to do was with the masking. Still not sure what benefit nodes would give me over layers + masking.
