You're doing it right but on Nikon you usually have to turn that clockwise to loosen it I believe, I went through this with an FG from the same era.

You can also try a small pair of slip joint Channel Locks and some rubber or tape on the part to prevent scratching. Here again, don't quote me but that is typically how you get those off is that part you're working on, then it pulls up from there. Be careful to not lose any hardware under it when you pull it.
