I’m trying to choose between these two FF mirrorless cameras. I don’t do a lot of video so that 4k crop isn’t a big deal to me on the EOS R. Each of them has pros and cons but I’m more interest if RF or E mount is a better ecosystem long term. What’s your thoughts?

How much impact does the camera have on the final picture vs the lens? Is it 50/50?

Sensor size has a huge effect on resolution and aberrations, bigger is better.

But between sensors of the same size and within a few years of each other the difference is minimal.

Lens renders an actual image. The field of view is completely determined by the lens. Camera's Jon is to sample it. The format must match the lens, but the implementation details are up to the camera. The type of sensor, or film, will impact the output. It could be bw film, of high resolution digital sensor, with our without color filters, IR filters, etc.

I like to think of it as the lens dictates the type and general look of the pictures you take, and the camera dictates how well / efficiently you can do that.

>autofocus capability, fps for burst shooting
>noise at a given ISO, dynamic range, resolution
>ergonomics & handling, viewfinder clarity

>how the bokeh looks
>distortion, chromatic & spherical aberration, field curvature
>sharpness at a given aperture
>vignetting, ghosting & flaring
both
>"lowlight capability" - noise and lowlight AF from camera, aperture from lens
>"effective field of view" - lens focal length combined with sensor size
>"effective depth of field" - lens aperture combined with sensor size
>autofocus speed - camera matters a ton, but lenses do come with different motors of varying speeds
>color - different cameras do color differently, but lenses also have varying color casts
>sometimes lenses just perform a bit differently based on the camera they're used on
You might be bottlenecked on something (like GPU + CPU), and sometimes the camera makes a huge difference, sometimes the lens makes a bigger difference. For just the "look" of an image, I would put lens > processing > camera, but the camera is still very important.

As someone who owned both, i kept the Canon.
Reason being i rarely do videos and wanted to keep my EF glass.
Both are very good cams.
the sony has more and better features in general.
the canon is a canon.

this is a weird one because larger sensor size really just means you're getting better resolution from the lens, cropping in means you're losing more resolution to the glass so you could make the argument that its the lens and not the camera body

Snoy is better when it comes to lens variety and their lenses are generally smaller, weigh much less. EOS R is slightly inferior as a camera (lacks IBIS, inferior AF) but has better ergonomics and actually has proper weather sealing unlike A7III, which might matter more in daily usage.
Z6 II has the least amount of compromise out of the three bodies but Z mount is huge. Also probably the best optics, but doesn't really matter in practice, they are all great optically.
so yeah, get the Panasonic S1

FF is 1 stop cleaner than APS-C and 2 stops cleaner than m43. This affects high ISO. Assuming equal ADC tech it also impacts base ISO DR.

Larger sensors are sharper out of camera. The effect is not "huge". In fact, I would say at low ISO it's of little consequence because of sharpening in post. At high ISO it's significant because crop images are noisier to begin with and sharpening makes this worse.

Digital sensors are Nyquist limited so larger sensors do not impact extinction resolution UNLESS the larger sensor has equal pixel density to the crop sensors (meaning higher total MP).
