There are two points that I'd like to discuss with you, in my relation to photography.
First is that saying your hobby is photography comes out as something very basic. It's immediately linked with instagram and taking snapshots with your phone. And then it becomes a bit tedious explaining that you use a camera and all of the questions why use a camera, when you can use your phone. At least these were the kind of conversations that I had with new people.
Secondly, is it really a worthwhile hobby, if you don't have any online presence. As I said, first link is to instagram: "What's your insta?"
I don't use any online sharing platform, as photography is not something that I'd pursue professionally, it's just a hobby. I capture shots, moments of my family, I go on city walks and shoot. My motivation is to recreate photos that I had seen before and make something that I like, not really proud of, but just enjoying my own photo. I then print them out and put in a booklet. My mom used to do this with film and now I do with our moments.
Explaining this to someone, who doesn't do this, I get many "What's the point?". Why would you do photography if you're not looking to get social media famous, or even just share it online. Why not searching for that one famous shot, that will go viral, get shared on Reddit and reblogged on Tumblr a few ten thousand times?
I used to thing that I don't care what other people think, but I had this on my mind for a couple of months now. It does feel a bit condescending getting dismissed, if you're not online.
Anyone else here without social media?
