Just got a D810 with 25k clicks for 750$ CAD with memory cards and extra battery included. I was planning on getting some AI-S primes, but they're fucking double the price or close to, relative to pre-Covid. What should I get? Some AF-D zoom, instead? I've never really owned zoom lenses before, excepting the 18-55 for my D7100. Budget is 500-700$ CAD. I'm already regretting buying a full-frame a little. Pic is something I took with the D7100 in Toronto.

i got a 50mm f1.4 afd the other day and i'm quite satisfied with it
it was cheap and it performs very well
other afd lenses such as 24mm f2.8 and 85mm f1.8 are well within your budget and quite good lenses as well

quality zoom lenses are rather expensive
either 24-120mm f4 or 24-70mm f2.8 are the usual choice, but not very good performers

good zooms are sigma art and above, a bit above your budget

Don't regret full frame. Take advantage of the classic lenses that are appropriate for your present sensor size. If you want a zoom, get the AF-D 35-70mm f/2.8. There are many great AF-D lenses for you to choose from. They're not consistently good across the board, but only one or two manufacturers are/were, so make sure you look up reviews first. The 35mm f/2, 24, 85 and 135 should all be excellent, and prolly only 200 bucks a pop. Most of the AF-D zooms were also surprisingly good. It's actually more the early G lesnes that were shit out of nowhere.

Does this not apply to primes? I'm seeing all the older AI-S's for quit a hefty sum, given that they presumably have older/less advanced optics and coatings that the AF-D primes that followed. I have to admit that I'm enticed by the convenience that my zoom on the D7100 offered. I guess I'll have to wait if I want to get one. Are zooms still a bit funky? I remember reading some Rockwell reviews >5 years ago, and he was saying that most of them still have minor limitations in chromatic aberration or visual acuity relative to cheaper primes.

modern primes are better but not that much better than afd era ones, once you stop down 2 stops or so
afd era zooms suck tho while modern zooms are just a notch below modern primes

personally i'm not a fan of zoom lenses for its compressed look

You'll want a 50mm either 1.8 or 1.4. They're sharp as hell, even the older ones. The 80-200 2.8 push pull is great, but heavy and does not have a tripod ring. 85 1.8 is an excellent lens as well.

For tele, I've been using the 28-200 lately and I'm kinda meh on it. Probably gonna sell it. I have a 70-300 coming I need to test this weekend, I've read mixed reviews on it.

35-70 2.8 pushpull is a fun but heavy lens, has a macro function as well. Horrible around the edges of pictures in most situations, though. Fairly sharp, but inconvenient and inconsistent.

If you want to dip your toes into film, get a Nikon body from the early 90s and share lenses across your system. I have an N8008s and its a dream. Lots on ebay and shopgoodwill.com

yeah, 50mmf1.4 afd is very nice and cheap
85mm f1.8 is also a bargain

wide angles are kind more expensive, i guess it's worth to buy a sigma art if you have the money for it

The 16-35 is great if you need it for certain applications, but will cost an arm and a leg. I got a nice Sigma 90mm macro lens that is pretty nice.
