If you are doing any underwater photography you need to have external back scatter lighting if you want to have any decent photos.
Your lights should be angled at the subject at 45degs on both sides, and depending on the environment you may want to use a red filter.

If you're scuba diving don't be a tool and use open circuit, use a re-breather if you don't want your shots to look like bubbly shit.

if I had unlimited money I'd do that but I like the look and feel of the cheap, fun, colorful point and shoots, and they're cheaper to begin with.

I'm leaning towards a Sea & Sea model and some of them have a large external side mounted flash.

If your putting any external strobes/flashes on your rig USE FUCKING WET CONNECTIONS (i.e the fiber optic ones) unless you want to flood your camera. The ports always fucking fail.

white light doesn't indicate "true colors" for a suite of life that evolved under almost exclusively blue ambient light. If a benthic organism looks black in 30ft of water, but red in 0ft of water, it's true color is black. Red means nothing to most of the marine world.

Okay this is getting philosophical you know exactly what I mean. A god damn clown fish at depth shot on colour with no strobes isn't going to be orange. Everything with be blue and black. Nobody wants their underwater photos looking like that. Again, I avoid the whole issue by shooting black and white. Last dive outing I decided to try some Ektachrome E100SW for shits and giggles though. Still need to get those developed.

In my case I am too poor for a real waterproof camera so I slapped a waterproof case on my old S8 and called it a day.
Turns out the quality was better than expected.
