so this was one of my most mishandled rolls. To preface, this is ultramax 400.
I accidentally shot half the roll at f16 1/4000, so i rewound it and re-exposed, which caused the double exposure, secondly i fucked up the developing times for all the baths, i wiped the film down before it was dry and then dslr scanned it.

I lost all motivation after i saw how the negs came out, converted them to B&W and fried the contrast in photoshop to try to salvage the little image i was left with.

Found superia expired in 2006 for sale at the thrifts.
The place is relatively cool so if its been laying there for 10 years it might not be too bad, at least thats what i keep telling myself lol.

I'll return with photos once i finish this roll. There's a classic car fair next week, might go ham there.

modern P&S cameras were, I think, the pinnacle of complicated and compact technology for cameras. It would cost far too much for the market right now. Even if they were going for $200 used I don't think it would be enough for it to be profitable for manufacturers. This is my conjecture.

If I wanted to make a new one, I would probably just use the optics and electronics from an existing digital compact and put a motor winder on it.

I wonder how hard it would be to make one yourself as an electronics hobbyist. It would probably take hundreds of hours and like a thousand dollars.

you can either go rodinal or HC-110. i guess if you won't be shooting that often rodinal would be cheaper because it comes in smaller bottles, but I vastly prefer hc-110 out of the two because the grain comes out finer.

Contax G2 w/35mm 2.0 for $1865. Need it or keep it? Been using my konica hexar but the 1/250th max shutter speed grinds my gears because i cant use 400 speed film to go from bright scenes to dark ones throughout the day.

Got a message out of the blue from my city's film lab asking if they could put a photo of mine up on display in-store for a while. I've always wanted to print and put up a series of photos in a small gallery or something, so I can't wait to go see it in person.
Hopefully this'll lead to them hiring me someday as I desperately need a day job that doesn't make me want to off myself ;_;

I'm an absolute beginner with analog/film.
I developed today my first couple rolls, the negatives look real nice and crisp, I'm real happy with the process and the results.
I wanted to scan the negatives to look at the pics on the computer however no matter how I scan them, no matter which side is up the film scans as if completely exposed. There are distinct frames and images on the negative yet the scanner sees it as pure black strips. I know there is specialised equipment for scanning photos but I wanted to try without throwing too much money to buy gear. Any advice how to fix this?
I suspect it may be that the film is to reflective for the scanner light but I have little idea how to mitigate this.
I'm using flatbed scanner in Brother DCP-T420W using the basic scan functionality built into GNU/linux
all tips appreciated

i recently got a canonet 28 from a surplus store (first film camera). Everything is in good condition; it even came with a uv filter and case.
However, the light seals are non existent. I was going to get a light seal kit for this specific camera from ebay, but they all look a little different. What should I do? I wouldnt have a problem with cutting out the foam material myself, but I dont exactly know where the light seals are supposed to go.

If you don't want to spend on gear, send that shit to a lab to be scanned. Should be in the range of ~5bux a roll + shipping. I'd do that for a while, and for every roll of film you send to get scanned, set aside the same amount of cash in an envelope, and when you have the funds buy yourself the most ridiculous film scanner your heart desires.

I actually just got back into shooting film, but I don't intend to do my own scans for now. Let the lab handle that shit for the few negatives that are actually worth it to scan.

Feels kinda sad that I will forever be labled a nophoto because I just want to print shit and eventually ditch film alltogether and just roll my own glass plates on a 8x10 camera.

It's great for longevity but honestly on 35mm it makes images too grainy for my taste and I believe it also reduces the speed of the film. I have gotten some photos I like but I'm probably going to try HC110 in the near future. I am also considering buying sealed pouches to put my chemicals into to stop them from going bad.

I have had success with this even at frustrating airports.

FYI to cuckolds who want to cope about this: airports in burgerstan and elsewhere are switching to higher power x-rays and CT scanners which wreck film of all kinds (not just high iso).

indoor or outdoor?
indoor you need to cool the warm light from ~3200k to 5500k (80c filter is safe inbetween)
outdoor you probably have to do the same if there's sodium lamps (usual streetlamp) and such.

Two things are often confusing that I want to help clarify
1. cooler colors (bluer) are higher color temp in kelvin (weird right)
2. white balance on film is a little different than on digital. Digital involves changing the balance in camera, so you lower WB from 5500k to 3200k for tungsten (indoor) lighting-- for film, the balance of the film does not actually change, so you are instead COOLING the light (passing through blue filter) in order to match the sensitivity of the film.
And of course you are doing the reverse (warming the light in overcast cool lighting) when you use an orange filter.

it won't have great resolution, (see >>4078602), but so long as it has the transparency unit (and a film holder) it will acceptably scan 35mm film. I don't think many printer/scanner combos have that, but it's worth checking

If you bulk load the canisters yourself you can just make them shorter. A whole roll of film is really nothing though, 24 or 36 exposures is not a lot for testing.

Tried using Ilford delta 3200 for the first time and the results were quite frankly embarrasing and I can not understand why.

All of the images I shot at night came out too dark, in many cases there are images to be seen. Just black. Pic related was shot at 5.6 125.

Somebody please explain what I might have done wrong?

you under exposed. if that picture was a 2.8f 60 it'd still probably be too dark. 3200 still isnt enough to hand hold shoot at night usually. get a tripod/wire release or use the timer.

I think it should work.

if you tape them together it may prevent developing on that portion so make sure to tape the base side. of course it'll all have to be done in a dark bag. You might mess up a couple frames but at least you'll be able to see if the cameras mostly work.

delta 3200 is a ~1000 iso film that is advertised as 3200 for its pushing potential (which is substantial). You need to find times and development regimes for 3200 and faster with your chosen developer. Strongly compensating and pushing developers such as microphen or atomal will get you more tonal range at such isos.

In any case, 3200 iso was almost certainly not enough for 5.6 1/125 at that light level which would have been something like an exposure level 2 or lower

for 35mm on 4x6 prints it's not noticeable but around 5x7 they/you will have to do digital sharpening that fucks with contrast. it's not SO bad at 5x7 but any larger it gets real wonky. black and white is the same.

consider that every camera needs two to four frames worth of film as a leader.
You could re-use the same piece of film as the leader for every camera, or use the leader from an already developed roll if you have one around. I do this when bulk loading too

well yeah but shooting 8 shots per camera should definitely let you test 3 cameras on a standard 36 exposure roll. Depends how in depth you want to go.

Slow shutter speeds don't really need to be tested since you can hear and see if it's 1 second or something. I've used Audacity before to analyze shutter speeds--record the sound of the shutter and you can visually see the sound of the shutter opening and closing. But it doesn't work for fast speeds, I found. Well, it wasn't very accurate on my computer.

but yes don't forget your leader is gonna be a frame or two.

What film stock would have been used for portraits historically? I know kodachrome is like the official film stock of pictures in Life Magazine or National Geographic, but what about Playboy? Or like those pictures of Japanese girls in pools in the 80s?

the usa, every cvs and walmart i've gotten gas near the last 3 months always has 3 packs of superia 400 and i guess it's just kodak gold but that fuji 200. london drugs here always has ilford stuff as well.

Is there a website or something that has example lighting shots for each 'stop' of exposure? Like my camera's meter is broken so I shoot full manual and do sunny 16 but when im in a situation where i am dealing with weird lighting I just dont know how many stops to subtract
is there like any general rules or inverted versions of s16 but for lower light/ indoor ??

I think this came out quite nice, this was my first roll of fp4 and I'm a big fan. I metered at 100 and did a stand dev in rodinal. came out very sharp with almost no grain.

how big are yall printing your pictures? i got this 6x7 slide printed in an 11x14 on a whim and it looks great, thinking of going even bigger to 16x20 or maybe 20x24. i doubt i can take my 35mm stuff much further past 8x10s or 11x14s on account of grain though

I feel like I am gaslighting myself, but I think there is a weird, warm spot in the middle of this 4x5 scan I made using an Epson v800. I made the image adjustments using negative Lab pro. I cannot decide on whether or not I want to buy the new intrepid 4x5 Mk 5. Or get into e6 development.

Just use HP5+ and push it to 1600. You can probably push it all the way to 3200 as well. You still won't get away with that sort of exposure value though, at most you'll get away with f/2.8 1/60 or something.

yes a cooling filter will make daylight balance film look more true to life at night with artificial light. tiffen 80A the main one i know. you dont need it though, whitebalance being off can look interesting on film imho.

Newfag to photography here, I’ve been wanting to get back into photography since I left high school and today I saw a Ricoh KR5 at a thrift store for 210 dollars Australian, it came with the original bag and instruction manual and other stuff. I was seriously considering buying it but didn’t. Did I miss a good thing? Or did I dodge a bullet? There was also a Kr 10 there with a really long lens that was 170 but didn’t come with all the same stuff. Sorry if this isn’t the right thread for this.

im not sure what the aud exchange is but that actually sounds like market value for a manual slr in a thrift shop if it was working and came with a clean normal lens. the kr10 a huge pass from me (electronic shutter) and a 170mm i'd have no use for.

we're getting there, chip shortages are worse than chemical shortages right now. a manual slr nikon in partnership with kodak/urban outfitters in the next 2 years highly likely. leica said they're doing more mp/a batches as well. and who knows what meme fuji will come out with next.

if you find one for cheap because of massacred light seals (common) it's an easy fix and worth it. you're probably better just looking for that little konica or minolta though.

Canonet is good, but it is not compact. It is a normal size camera and heavy enough.
But yes, it’s really good. The only disadvantages are 1/500 minimal shutter speed and iso-scale up to 800. If you like me and you’re pushing film, it would be a problem.

Unpopular opinion: I like photos taken with ql17(2) more than ones from ql17 iii.

no low iso film was just more common, so on cameras with light meters (not yours) they usually dont go above 400. I'd put some HP-5 through it if you wanna devlop yourself. If not then just get some porta 400.

Buy the cheapest one. Ilford hp5 is a good option for b&w. Fuji400h or Kodak gold 200 for color.
Do search of Fomapan 400, I am sure it should be present in your country.

In your case higher iso is better, because it is really small DoF for your frame format and you need to raise the aperture value up to have enough room for focus.
