Maybe you just have a thermal problem ?
These lens bodies are now mostly made of plastic and react sensitively to large temperature changes in a short time.
In my experience, if I transport the equipment in a well-padded - and therefore well-insulated - photo bag and then want to work with it in sub-zero temperatures, the lenses need at least half an hour to acclimate, otherwise I get no sharp photos.
That's why I now use a normal rucksack without insulation.
But then the 18-55 works fine, even in a multi purpose role.
