Cameras have evolved so much in the last 10 years that it really doesn't matter that much what you shoot on. Full frame, crop, whatever. Even the entry level modern bodies are extremely good. Even cheap lenses nowadays perform extremely well.

What I meant is the weird choice of not one but two 1997 Nikon speedlights to go with a Canon camera
If you can afford to camp up at 15 m for a whole summer, why don't you get a more useful setup? I mean, it's nice that pros use their equipment until it breaks but some choices I just don't get

someone still has to pilot the drone to the location. they have to control the camera from the drone. they have to orient the drone to get good composition. and they have to do all of this with clunky computer controls instead of slick, natural manual ones AND get a good shot out of the process before the battery is run down to the point where if they don't make a beeline back home all their stuff is gone.

This. If anything, droneshots take more skill and are riskier than telephoto from a mile away. Fuck up and you're quickly down $€1000. Mainly, they allow you to take shots that would otherwise be impossible. When you've everything already done thousand time, this counts, and I guess this competition is the proof of it. Winner is done on a wacky Chinese ultra wide macro lens that we made fun of when it was announced and first released.

Thanks for posting, I checked the equipment of many of the shots. The vast majority was shot on quite a bit worse equipment than I own. Nothing else motivates me quite like this.

It's probably just boomers seething because their gigatelephoto lenses got dethroned by more normal and even compact setups attached to RC helicopters. Carrying 200lbs and relying on a tripod is sovl.

Realize that salaries, as well as cost of living, are quite a bit higher than in most other places. Which makes affording something expensive still easier in Switzerland where you have a "minimum wage" of 3.5k vs a couple hundred EUR or similar in Italy for example. (both countries do not have a fixed minimum wage, I am going by "most common" minimum wage)
