Yeah, leicas have always been expensive and they haven't really been "tools" since the M4 which cost $360 new in 1969 (the equivalent of $3,000).

Leica had to start marketing to rich people to survive after the M5 failed and forced them to move production to canada for a number of years until they bailed themselves out of that debacle. I think it's fine. People should view buying leicas like when people fancy watches.

90% of any photo is just composition, exposure and focus point. If you can't take a good picture on an iPhone, you can't take one on a Leica. That doesn't mean the Leica shouldn't exist. It's just a nice camera for people who like it.

I think it's a good way to test the market so we can get more new film cameras made but for cheap(er). like imagine a new Pentax K1000 to get people interested in (film) photography but at a film student's budget. Kodak is hiring people so they can start throwing out film to keep up with demand and Cinestill just made a new 400 iso film, will this make film prices go down? probably not, but at least I can get my hands on some fucking rolls haha

Arguably manual lenses are worth more than af since they can adapt and work on any camera. Nikon af-d glass no longer auto focuses on a series cameras.

this summer I spent two weeks on Hydra, Greece, and I saw more leicas there than in all the years before. Its upper middle class euro family man boomers that buy these things. French lawyers and finance people. He rides a road bike to work and uses the camera to take pics of his pretty wife and loud kids

Canon and Nikon dom't need to bother stating af accuracy, it's so much more accurate than rangefinders. Naturally, some people have better eyes than others, so it's hard to test.

it's not that hard once you get the hang of it, the ovf is totally fine for all but the fastest / most tele lens choices
digital m's also have live view (with decent focus peaking) and optional evf's

I went to a photography convention of sorts, all the Leica owners were walking around with their Leicas around their chest and stroking each other's dicks whenever they saw one another.

It was surreal to me. Almost laughable.

I'm not really their target demographic but I don't understand the appeal. You could get so much film and a really nice darkroom setup for the price, and I don't think a Lecia substantially outperforms any decent 35mm camera.

I also don't see why you wouldn't just get something like this instead

It's mostly for rich posers these days. Like the whole brand. Kinda sad but Leica did it to themselves.

In the high end cinema side there is Arri, which is also a heritage German brand. And they are top of the high end cinematography cameras. Everyone tries to copy Arri Alexa. Arri as a company has managed to evolve through the years with technology and they are still extremely relevant.

Leica became mostly a cool toy for rich people. I don't know many well known photographers who shoot with Leicas anymore, as opposed to most cinematographers who prefer Arri cameras over every other option.
