Just bought the EF-S 55-250 F4-5.6 IS STM which i have adapted to my R7 and so far i am very impressed with the results. Didn't cost me more than $100ish shipped. Thought I'd take a chance after seeing several reviewers praising it despite its low cost.

Are there other secrets like it where you get more than what you pay for? Users of other systems are welcome to chime in.

pentax FA lenses and minolta (sony A mount) AF lenses are a goldmine. many really good, few great and cheap, but it's old and supply and demand is taking over. the SMC Pentax-FA 50mm F1.7 is a very good prime lens for the price.

The Pentax DA 16-45/4 punches a whole lot above its class, it is super sharp only to be bested by the HD DA 16-85. It is constant aperture, light and focuses quickly and accurately. Great colors and contrast through the zoom range.
My only gripe with it is the reverse zoom, the barrel extends towards the wide end so built in flash is unusable. Not that big of a loss if you ask me.
Too bad it is becoming kind of a unicorn, hard to come by at times.

Couldn't do much about it, the lighting was placed by the museum idiots not knowing how light works.
The light hitting the arch was an ancient jiggawatts anti-aircraft spotlight piece, hot as the sun.

I've got the 16-85; I got it as part of a kit with the k3ii, and its great. I sometimes consider switching to a collection of primes to cover those focal lengths (I have a 50mm (F I think), and the 100mm Macro, but its just so good I think I'd only gain by going for the FA-limiteds, which would cost a fortune

I mostly do landscape so rarely need wider apertures

You don't need all to "cover the focal lengths"
You can do well with the 20-40, 70 and maybe 15 but in reality you need to see what focal lengths you shoot the most and get a single prime in that range, keep the zoom for everything else.

Mostly cheap in relative terms, but the VC 35mm f2.5 PII consistently impresses me with it's sharpness, even wide open.
Low expectations, but the 7artisans 18mm f6.3 is surprisingly good for a body cap type lens.
TTArtisan 50mm f1.4 (m-mount) is also great optically, but could never get it calibrated properly for the rangefinder. Still great to use adapted to mirrorless.

samyang/rokinon manual 12mm f2 (apsc) can be had for ~$90 used and is a staple of astro and landscape. It has a great minimum focus distance too so it can make for lots of interesting photos with a subject and lots of background context

Yep. You can also work around it by planning to crop the compositions or use the in-camera crop modes. These examples are the full frame. My favorite personal camera hack.

The a99II is only usable because you can disable the SLT focus and use the sensor integrated, it essentially becomes an A7II with an A mount
The SLT part of it is the same as the A99 and has the same shitty focusing where it would misfocus even on hyperfocal distance or not fire despite in focus. Truly a shitshow of a focusing system.
While my K-1 with old screwdrive lenses focusing fast and snappy, even third party. If it is bad it is bad, no need to brandfag about.

Pretty solid choice, close to true normal as well on APS-C.
f/2.8 won't do much bokeh though, you might want to get a 50/1.8 or something like that in the Minolta range as well.

That's part of what I want, because the kit lens only hits 3.5 and I did think 2.8 was likely not as far as I'd want to go but are you sure I want a 50mm instead? Isn't that really close on APS-C as it is? I thought I should try to get as close to 30mm 1.x as possible. And how much of this is the actual lens vs. just the specs it's rated to like that? I know what I'm trying to get more or less stat wise but is that actually a good lens? Because I found it on Ebay for like 30 something dollars and at this point the camera itself can't be worth more than 150 street price.

Following up on this, any thoughts on a Sigma 30mm F/1.4 EX DC HSM AF? I like the idea of a 1.8 or 1.4, but I still think 30mm is maybe the way to go since it's an APS-C that way I get as close to that full frame 50mm as possible. Right?

I'm not very fond of Sigma, first they design some of the worst bokeh possible, second they use that rubberized finish on their lenses that turns to sticky tar in just a few days of direct summer sunlight, a few years without the sunlight, the thing is you will likely end up with a sticky shit lens.
No matter how good it is if you won't touch it because it is disgusting to use.

Hmm... Okay, that's unfortunate. I'd be down to snag that first Minolta I mentioned but as was stated I'm worried if the f2.8 isn't enough towards my intended target. That being said, I can also do a 50mm Minolta but I feel like that's not gonna convert to the focal length I was after.

I did bokeh shots on an F4 lens, just make sure yoour subject is close enough and the background is far enough.

I loved my Sigma 30mm. It sounds like you will be using it on a Sony or some kind of mirrorless body, so it should not have the common Sigma/CanonEF autofocus issues. The finish on mine never came off, but I do have a friend with a 50mm that had that happen.

It's the Sony A37 it's a DSLR from 2012, entry level. A mount body. I'll eventually get a mirrorless as an upgrade but I'd rather flesh this one out for now until I get further in my career. I'm happy to try a sigma if they don't suck but I don't want to get some shoddy garbage that melts like that...

It is the question of when, not if. Softeners in plastics do that
UV can accelerate it but it will do it on its own. Why Sigma still insists on that finish is beyond me.

Never used the xc version. It's plastic with no weather sealing or an aperture ring (which is a selling point on fuji). But only 200 bucks. That's a steal. I think the xf version is a fantastic lens for $400. Optically very good, and very nice build. It's a little weather sealed tank. I think that guy has pretty reliable reviews.

I got it for less then 80$ and...it's good. Corners are sharp at f8, center is sharp wide open. Cheap, compact.
Downside: tend to flare with the sun in the frame

You'll have to do your own research to see if your adapter accepts EF-S lenses. I had to modify (butcher) my 55-250 to use with full frame cameras.

I just bought this lens for $90.

I also purchased the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro for $200. The oldest/first version from 1991. It is supposed to be just as sharp as the new RF 100mm macro. Intend to use it as a portrait lens.

OP, that's a solid lens. Matches well with the standard 18-55 kit lens. It was my first extra lens I got for my T1a. What was great was the relatively short minimum focusing distance. I could get great sorta-macro shots with it. At 250mm, the focus was kinda soft and the sharpness overall isn't fantastic, but it's not bad, either. I picked up the 70-300mm IS lens for anything requiring a long lens. Far superior. Not cheap, but still cheaper than L-glass.

I use XC 35/2.0 on my XT100 - $200 lens, takes excellent photos.

Got the camera with XC 15-45 for cheap on black Friday deal. Bought XC 50-230 as well.

These lenses and this camera do everything I need really. I haven't even contemplated buying additional shit I love these cheap Fuji glass and camera.

Did you have to do anything special in order to mount it on the FF camera? I have a 500D, but am saving for an FF camera, so only want to buy EF compatible lenses. That lens is cheap and looks good, so would consider buying it, if it would fit on an EF camera down the road.

Yes you need to modify the mount to remove the EFS hump. Sorry to be a gatekeeper but it's pretty straightforward if you have any sort of mechanical skill.

this if you can get over the shitty build, noisy AF motor, and bad QC (buy two and return one). oh and you'll need to buy the lens station to update the firmware otherwise it drains your battery dry in a day even when off. and you'll have to create a lens profile in whatever raw processor since none are available last I tried

Its that bad, huh? Then why would you recommend it? Its not a cheap lens in any way. You could get a used 85mm Tamron (that measures sharper and have much better build quality) for half the price of the Samyang.

Apparently the Viltrox 85mm is supposed to be pretty good as well. Its around $350-400 new, so almost half the price.
