Ive got that compact enlarger and its pretty nice, ive only done b/w 5x7 prints on it though. Need to get a better suited tripod/copy stand or what have you to make bigger prints.

Pretty new to film. Developing and scanning myself also with an Epson V600. This was taken with a Minolta X-700 and the 50mm f1.4. I just recently picked up a Nikon F2 and have a 85mm Zeiss Planar T* f1.4 and 200mm Nikkor QC f4 for it. Need to invest in a wide angle as most of my shots are landscapy anyway

I already have several paintings occupying my walls by my late grandmother and they have way more emotional and aesthetic value than my snapshits. And literally nobody would give a shit about random landscape shits from some dude to put on their own wall vs. their own cellphone family photos they at least have some connection with. Selling them is pointless hassle that doesn't pay the effort and normies are fine with inkjet shit anyway so why bother with the darkroom?

there's not really any such thing as 'wrong' color balance with C41 negative film because correction is an inherent part of printing or scanning. Every stock has a slightly different natural balance, and yours happens to be more different, which you failed to correct in the inversion.

Except that i stated that it was a slide film and i wanted it specially for slide purpose, but since i wasn't the one who went to the lab it didn't have the result i expected.
On a technical point the film is correctly scanned and treated since it's supposed to look like that in cross-processing, but no number of "correction" will make it appear like it should have been using E-6, and the "slide-projection" use is forever lost

Maybe I got the wrong end of the stick.
I was kind of talking out of my ass with the 'no such thing as wrong balance' thing but it makes sense to me because the CC you do in enlarging is always a bit different each time, and inverting in Darktable requires you to give it the color of the film base and pick out something to WB against, so to me there's no natural starting point that can be right or wrong.
You seem like a cool guy, have my attempt at CC.

Reposting for more advice. I have a box of 35mm slides that I want to digitize for print. I've been looking at different 35mm scanners but they all seem to have lots of negative reviews. From what I understand, a bed scanner is better than a lens attachment for a camera.

Can someone please suggest what I should do? Pic related was named #1 in some "best film scanners" list but it has a lot of 1-star reviews.

Vision3 is fun but man the chemistry I've been using to develop it dies quickly. This shot was overexposed one stop and developed in CS2 and I think it's the last roll I can do before I can replace it. Lasted about 5 rolls and 13 days, before it started to get weird. Maybe I'm just not used to developing color though.

So to add on to this, the scan quality is great with this thing. I’m using a 7600 I got used on eBay and running it with a pirates copy of VueScan, then fucking with the raw in Gimp. Overall I’m happy with the results but be aware that it takes a while to do, especially at higher resolution and with more passes. But in terms of sheer optical quality it’s pretty good, and I got mine used for like $150 with all the cables and film holders.

It depends on the flash you are using. In pic related you would have to use the red auto mode and stop down an extra stop (f16) according to the guide because it only goes to 800. I dont see any other reason why it wouldn't work, but I could be retarded.

I’ve got that scanner. It’s pretty good—way better than my Epson V600. I use mine with Vuescan and am usually happy with the results. I believe new Plusteks come with Silverfast but I haven’t tried that one yet.

HP5 is like the cheapest black and white film I can find though. Tri-x is as much as color film practically. I'd love to try some other stuff if it was cheaper, but it's hard to beat 5-7$ HP5

now for gimp. ensure you have color management enabled. then, before exporting, use Convert to Color Profile to convert the image to sRGB IEC61966-2.1. all images destined for internet consumption should be exported as sRGB.

Impossible to know just from time.
If it was frozen all that time, it should be almost like new
If it was stored in a warm cupboard all that time, it will need like iso 6 if it can even record an image at all
Highly recommend buying one or two rolls and testing, keeping in mind it may be inconsistent between rolls.

Hardest part for me was loading the film. I don't have a changing bag, and actually putting the film on the rolls is pretty finicky. The developing itself is extremely easy, you mix the chemicals, pour them in the tank and mix.

I'm trying to dial in my setup for DSLR scanning, it's as fun as it's annoying. One take away for now - I should get better macro extension tubes, or a proper macro lens with AF, macro is fun.

Better than AF is a way to hoick your camera up and down smoothly in precise steps so you can get focus exactly. I actually use a cheapo lightstand with a fitting so the camera points down. If I loosen one of the nuts I can slowly move up and down and lock it in place once I see sharp focus on the zoomed in view.

Your lens might also suck at high magnification but making sure it's in focus across the whole field is vital.

This was taken with my setup and I think it's at least on par with what a lab might give me, except also in RAW so a lot more malleable.

APSC / FF doesn't matter. Might need to get some filter spacers to hit focus distance while filling the frame with a long macro like a 105mm. Not totally sure, I use a 50mm macro on ff to scan.

oh I probably should mention k10d doesn't have light preview on the screen, I have to look through the viewfinder so it's kinda inconventient, but once I'm done with the light table I'll see if the extra battery grip will maybe make it more convenient, if I fix that to the tripod I should have more space to look

as far as I know the nikon aspect is that you can produce jpeg scans in camera. no need to worry about that if you're going to shoot raw and do the processing on a PC.

it will be so long as you're careful to not snap it. if you are shooting on a manual advance slr you cant take it straight out the freezer, just advance slow and smooth

It needs mo software at all. It's a simple, non-electronic attachment. Nike n probably has some automatic inverting software but I just use a Photoshop action to invert the scans on my PC. I scan using a Sony a7, canon 50 macro, and that Nikon adapter.

sure. so I used GIMP but you can do the same with photoshop or any photo editor.
open the image, go to Colors > Levels. you can see in the combined view, the black point is too high and the white point is too low. all the information in the image is contained in that area, so it ends up looking really low contrast. there's a color cast, too.
from here you can either do things manually by changing the Channel option to Red, Green, and Blue in turn and move the black point and the white point to where the data actually is in the image. or, to be quick and easy, just click Auto Input Levels and it'll do that for you. that's what I did for the japan photo. for your second photo, auto levels made it a bit too contrasty for me so I lowered the black point value by 4 in each channel and raised the white point value by 12 in each channel.
this also has the benefit of correcting the color cast. you can do finer corrections by playing with the values of each channel. for both these images, I think auto levels did a good job correcting the colors.
if you take this to an extreme, you can really do a lot to color correct an image. here's an alex burke video where he goes over a more complex (but similar in principle) process in photoshop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylIyA6wQGcY

Used my Canon A1 for the first time in a while and I made a completely retarded mistake.
Forgot how to rewind the film and when I felt a little more tension than expected on the little turning knob thing I thought I had to pull at it to release the film canister which of course opened up the door. I instantly realized my mistake and shut the door closed but I don’t know if it fucked up the roll or not. The door didn’t open fully, just unlatched and I’m not entirely sure if it’s enough to let light leak through.
Door opens on the left side and the film fills up on the right.
Thoughts? Can it be saved? I’ve rolled up the film properly now but won’t be able to send it in to get developed for another week or so to find out if it’s fucked or not.
Also ECN2 film loads into a 35mm camera just like any other C41 right?

Yes. It will work in your camera the same as regular film, the remjet doesn't cause problems. But it will absolutely fuck up C41 machines, so do not send it to your average lab. Either homedev or send it to people who explicitly do ECN2.

of course it could have also been over-developed but IME Delta 400 can come out quite differently depending on the developer. Rodinal and it's as grainy as you'd expect but a PQ-type developer and it's super fine.

It's a zone focus camera, you turn the rings on the lens and set it thusly. They are pretty ok for what they are.

How to focus? Turn the rings to roughly the distance you guess the subject is and set the aperture to determine the depth of field. The viewfinder is just for composing the frame and you won't be able to tell if the subject is in focus, you just have to wing it - it's pretty easy if you can read the markings on the lens

We're not nerds, it's just you who's a Numbers are dead accurate just remember top number is feet and the bottom is civilised world measurements, set the aperture with the iso on on the ring and the time as the pictures show and you're good to go, just be mindful of the depth of field you'll have to work with since you'll be adjusting the exposure with the shutter speed mostly before you figure out how to change aperture however you like and compensate for it

It was in Ilfosol3 at 68 degrees for however long the massive devchart says. I didn’t have a filter on at all, I should probably learn how to use those properly. I had a sky filter but It was on my other lens. But yeah it was noon in the Arizona desert, the lighting was just harsh in general

It's one of the few actually reliable Soviet cameras because it's so simple mechanically that even gulag slaves couldn't fuck it up. Focus is only by scale so you will have to guess the distance, but there was a separate rangefinder made for these cameras that goes in the cold shoe, just search for BLIK rangefinder on Ebay and you'll have a ton of them for practically nothing.

we've all probably done this. it's possible that the film that was rolled up more towards the inside is either fine or only will have light leaks around the top and bottom. the film that was towards the end of the roll is probably fucked. but it's still worth getting the roll developed and finding out.

no, I don't want a faded look. Personally, yours looks a tinge too yellow for me, but mine is much more blue than yours is yellow. And my biggest problem with mine is it feels very flat and faded which I do not like at all. Yours has a much better clarity. I'll try to raise the black point even more on mine and fix the color cast. This was me pushing superia 400. Not sure if it was worth it.

Also agreed on the other post, lol if he thinks a shitty scan is "film colors".

if I don't have multiple rolls to develop at once the shipping costs outweigh the savings of mailing it to a cheaper lab. Last time I waited till I had 4 or 5 rolls to send and by the time I got my shit back 3 weeks later, I had just barely broken even vs. the local lab price and also I had to wait, well, 3 weeks. Next time I finish a single roll I'll just bring it in to my lab and that way I can pick it up the next day.

I got 5 rolls of their first batch and really loved it.

Couple of warnings/notes:

Some people find it needs more exposure than its 80iso box speed (+1/2 or +2/3 stops seems to be the average, although I got normal looking results at box speed).

It has quite low red sensitivity compared to modern Ilford or Kodak emulsions, so your reds will come out a bit darker. This also impacts using orange or red filters for skies.

It's a very basic 6x6, Ami has two aperture settings and one shutter speed, Ami 2 has like 3 or 4 speeds + B but also same aperture as Ami 1 I believe.

the sun in the afternoon. I took it out because it was blooming and wanted to take some pics on film & digital.
Negatives look tad sharper.
This image is somewhat distorted (as you can probably see). Once I have the scanning dialed in I'll shoot it again for comparison.

What are you using to scan film? If you're using a shitty scanner like me (I have the V600) that could be the reason why you don't like your results because the Epson adds some weird colored noise due to it's low resolution.

A surprise find!
bought an old commie medium format and when I opened it there was a roll of 120 film labeled FOTON Fotopan FF in it.
it appears to have been fully shot but it wasn't fully rolled back so I suppose I might have exposed the final shot of the roll to the light since I wasn't expecting it to be loaded, but nevermind that.
The film is obviously finito, it was so stiff it couldn't be rolled with the forwarding knob at all so I went to a dark room, unloaded it and rolled properly.
Now the question is how do I go about developing this?
As far as I can tell from my 5 minutes of googling its a black and white film and probably made between the 1970 and 1990. I normally use Fomadevs XTOL and I planned to do one more tank with it and make fresh one so it would be a good chance to try it but I can't tell or find what were the development recipes for it originally.
Any ideas how to develop expired mystery film?

It's polish 50 ASA film made till mid-80's.
Don't expect much, they are not as tough as ORWO stuff - probably stand dev in rodinal will gibe "best" results.

it can be developed in "all commonly used developers" but they recommend their own HYDROFEN FOLTON W-17 or N10 along with the recipe for it.
Can be fixed in "any acidic fixer" so it essentially fits the fomadevs profile, even the devtimes are not that far off.
Should it be developed longer/shorter/etc now that it is possibly 50 years expired?

I use a piece of cardboard out of which I've cut a just over 36x24mm hole. You really don't need any fancy overpriced 3D printed gear to do DSLR scanning.
I originally used a holder designed for a flatbed scanner but I found raising the film above the light table caused reflections. Now I just drag it along the table surface. It doesn't seem to cause any scratches.

In my opinion you should ditch scanners altogether because the ones that gives good results costs several thousands. Get yourself a nice DSLR scanning setup. Get a 20MP+ camera.

Yeah it'll work wonders. I got a zoom slide duplicator a couple days ago myself, that kit you picked requires a good macro lens with next to no field curvature, wouldn't recommend unless you already have that.

Prakticas are the only dependable Eastern bloc cameras, Zenits were manufactured by Soviet slave labor with no quality standards and have always been pure meme cameras. You should try to find the MTL5b because it has a CdS light meter that uses modern LR44 batteries. M42 system is also where you can find a ton of cheap ass Japanese cameras under many different brand names and rebadged Prakticas selling for pennies, like Cosina, Chinon, Carena, Porst, Revue etc. All of them are better than the Zenit. Pentax Spotmatic is the one to avoid simply because due to being a hipster meme for a long time they are vastly overpriced, however Fujica and Yashica M42 bodies are still surprisingly cheap. Can't really go wrong with any of them.

I've had my SQ-A since 2005. Hasn't missed a beat. Great cameras that everyone sleeps on. I could've 'upgraded' to a Hasseblad long ago but never saw the point. The lenses are fantastic and most are only $100-$200/ea. 120 backs and the waist level finder are fucked up expensive to buy separately. Best to get a kit that has the accessories you want and then buy whatever additional lenses you want individually.

Not that guy but I like medium format more for intentional shooting. If I'm going out to do portraits or landscape shooting and I know I'll be able to take my time, I prefer it. The negatives are about 4 times as big as 35mm, so if you want big scans or big prints it's arguably worth it. But film is of course much more expensive on a per shot basis.

I won the auction for a camera on November 1st, the guy shipped it the 6th. Then I got a tracking number for it on the 10th, which only says "tracking number created" and nothing else. It's still not here and every time I email the guy he just says sometimes it takes a while for international and won't explain what's going on with the tracking number.

It's a few days past the expected delivery window so I could ask for a refund but I'd rather just have my camera. It's only $80 so it seems like a weird scam, if that's what it is. Anyone have ideas?

This will work much better if you bring the film ~1/2" or more away from the screen so you don't get the display pattern

the moon is sunny 16. You overexposed it. And it looks out of focus a little too but I'm not sure. You don't need 3200 speed film for the moon, it being so grainy probably doesn't help here.
