I've literally never done any serious attempts at photography in my life outside of family portraits and want to get into it. My friend told me to just watch this video. Is it worth picking one of these up used on ebay?

shoot film if you can afford it. it puts you on a level playing field with everyone else who shoots film, and cameras are relatively cheap. plus, the image quality is largely dependant on correct exposure and film stock, rather than on camera, (assuming your lens isn't completely ass)

His photos always are heavily edited to the point where it doesn't matter what camera he uses. The first video I saw of him was fun back then but god damn it's repetitive. It's the same video over and over again with his annoying voice lmao.

Go watch other youtube reviews about the camera and look at flickr samples. It's a good camera and I also started this hobby with the X100F. Learn the functions, shoot a lot, learn composition, etc. Enjoy.

I mean a $150-200 and $800 of film/dev/scan equipment vs a $1000 DSLR is a somewhat decent comparison.
Black and white film is like $7 a roll, you could buy around 60 rolls, then have enough to get a patterson tank and a used plustek. That's over 2000 shots, and from experience doing everything yourself really forces you to think more about what you're shooting.
A cheap DSLR is probably better for most people but it's not completely insane. If you ship all the film to someone else yeah that's stupid.

I would go Olympus though. Grab an original O-MD E-M5, with the Olympus 12-50mm lens. It's a cheaper, but sharp enough zoom lens with weather sealing. Great all around package that you can take out in harsher conditions.

I have my darkroom in my laundry room, I didn't have to remodel anything. It's very cheap to set up if you know what you're doing and aren't afraid of getting your hands dirty with chems. Film costs mount. You're looking at around $1 a shot. People often shoot 1000+ in a year. That's buying a new high end DSLR every single year.

You can buy a pretty fucking good digital interchangeable lens camera with a lens and a godox flash for a couple hundred bucks.

It’s only $1 a shot if you’re shooting expensive c41 and getting it developed and scanned at a lab. If you do black and white or bulk ECN2, then home dev and scan it cuts the cost way down. From my own math and experience with home rolled 250d it works out to about $10 a roll (chemicals included), so more like 27-30 cents a shot. For black and white it would be even cheaper.

Film is fun on the side! You get to use all mechanical cameras that will always, always be able to be fixed and film itself is over 100 years old and it's unlikely it will ever stop being produced - long after digital cameras are military only due to rare earth metal shortages and the last pentax croaks. But as the guys first camera, it's not the days of cheap 1 hour photo anymore, it's going to suck, he doesn't even know how shaky his hands are yet.

Now you are new so you're going to ship color film to a lab. that's about $10 a roll, then another $10 to $15 for developing and scans... before shipping. So you wait about 5 or 10 rolls before you get to see your photos to save that $15 in back and forth shipping. Or you buy developing kit. This is all consumable as well and will set you back a few hundred immediately.

Or you could spend a couple hundred bucks on a camera that will take hundreds of thousands of shots for $0 a snap with no need for anything but battery charging.

Digital still ain't bad. The price of film starts to add up when you get a lot of photographs. If the photos on my DSLR were film then it would have costed about $5335 from about 9,500 photographs I have taken, and of course not counting how I'll take more practice photos with the film camera.

It's a good starting camera in that it teaches you to stay focused and to git gud with one focal length instead of dabbling in a ton of different ones. It's a proven formula, a lot of great photographers used one lens for almost all their work.

That said you can probably get an X-E4 with a 23mm f2 for less money and pretty much have the same thing, but with the added possibility of using a different lens in the future. The 35mm f2 may be easier field of view to start out with.

Really, the most important camera "spec" is how exciting and encouraging it feels to go out and shoot with it, which I think is the whole point of that camera. Same with Leica, it's more of a fashion accessory for dentists, but if that's what it takes for some people to actually go out and shoot it does the job.

Some barrel distortion on the wide end but nothing you can't fix, pretty amazing low light performance, and you can get it for like 200 bux with low shutter count. Great dynamic range too, same sensor as D7000 but it has a nice flippy screen.
The bad? Older lenses won't meter and compatibility with mechanical aperture lenses is limited.
Don't buy a fucking wormji.

Buy the micro four thirds olympus

Unless you want to be paid to take pictures by other people there is no reason to go further than micro four thirds cameras. The detail, noise, and dynamic range are still leaps and bounds ahead of flagship phones and the interchangeable lenses, hot shoes, and ergonomics are more enabling of good photography. If you are rich and a little snobby, you can upgrade to a new micro four thirds camera and nicer lenses later. You will get noticeably better pictures from the newer gear. If you are quite the spender, an APSC camera like from fujifilm will do a bit better still.

Full frame cameras, like f2.8 zoom lenses, are for people that want to be paid to take photos. The differences are negligible until you are cropping shit and then printing it for clients who just paid you $5000 for 5 hours of actual work that you probably enjoyed. Don't get a big ass DSLR, not even a cheaper older one, they are huge and they were always intended for pro journalists and wedding photographgers, not hobbyists.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH FILM IF YOU WANT TO GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY.
FILM PHOTOGRAPHY IS A SEPARATE HOBBY FROM DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND IS MORE ABOUT THE DIY ASPECT THAN THE ART.

Do not buy a fixed prime lens camera for your first camera. Do not buy a film camera for your first camera. DO buy a used interchangeable lens DSLR or mirrorless camera with a zoom lens. I think mirrorless is actually even better for brand new shooters bc you can see real time via screen or EVF how exposure is controlled. Kit zoom lens is good for finding out what focal lengths you like using. After a while of using that, then upgrade to better lenses/new cameras once you know wtf you’re doing.

Dude, get a Canon RP or Sony A7III and a 50mm lens. It will be cheaper and better set up. After that you can get some other lenses, with x100v you are stuck with one focal length and you might not even like that. Fuck that Youtuber has shitty opinions.

DO buy a fixed prime lens for your first camera. With a fast aperture you can take photos that don't look like ass in so many more situations, and it's so compact and handy you can easily take it many more places. If you have the slow variable aperture kit zoom, well, ok, you're only taking it outside in ok light or putting up with godawful noise levels that make it look like you used a phone, and it can get frustrating trying to get good shutter speeds without IBIS. What are you learning there? To spend another hundred on a flash and never take ambient light photos indoors/in the evening/morning? Or you're going to buy the fast zoom for a thousand fucking dollars.

If you are continuously stepping back you want a wider range

You can see via screen on DSLRs too, but I think for newbies that's the worst thing you can do. It's a crutch. Zoom lenses are the way to go though. D5200+18-55mm VR is arguably one of the best beginner kits you can have.

An eye-level finder is a crutch by the very same logic.

Seems to me you're missing out on the basics if you don't understand the value of different eye-levels; or more realistically, you think you're a "street photographer" in a video game, and thus think you get a higher "score" by holding the camera next to your face to show courage?

different people learn differently though, same argument people make in favor of film for newbies (can't review until developed) vs instant playback vs realtime exposure preview
the difference between seeing your settings change as you take the image vs immediately after isn't that different honestly
but i do think relying on the live exposure preview (over experience / histogram) can be a crutch down the road

obv with film, where you can't see what your adjustments are doing, is a different beast, but that's also why i don't recommend film for beginners
if anything, learning with exposure preview might help someone learn metering even quicker, because they see what it looks like to be under/over exposed, and can see when the meter gets it wrong

Your goal is to take pictures exposed the way you want them exposed. There's no reason to make that harder than it needs to be. There is no inherent value in being able to expose without instant feedback.

Granted, people do hard things for the sake of being hard all the time, because they enjoy the challenge. Like playing a video game on hard, or climbing a sheer rock face when there is a gentle sloping path to the top. But a beginner is just learning to walk, the sheer rock face is just a pointless distraction. Taking good photos is challenge enough for a beginner.

The mechanical shutter is practically a vestige of mirrorless cameras now that electronic shutters are good enough. It's just a case of them getting round to removing them.
The a7s is marketed as and is primarily intended as a camcorder, ch-chk or not.

It's a heavily video oriented camera that gives up some stills capabilities for better video capabilities. It is a camcorder. Not in the early 2ks single purpose device sense but single purpose hardly exists anymore. Yes, previsualize, but use whatever tools you can find to help you. Due to technological limitations all he had to work with was viewing filters and polaroid backs, a mirrorless camera that you can set to B&W mode is simply that idea taken to its full conclusion.

When I saw the X100v I thought that switch on the front as the timer. How nice, I liked the always-accessible self timer on film SLRs! I might actually like this camera! Nope. It's not. It's a switch so you can change the viewfinder "experience". And see here for what you get. It's not relevant to photography. What a fucking rip. The X100v is for people who care all about gear and "experiencing" their gear. The recreational menu divers, the people who idly look through the OVF of their DSLR and mess with the focus ring but never press the shutter button, the people who delight in dry-running film camera, etc. The XE4 is for people who take photos.

I recall in one of his videos he mentions having arthrogryposis which prevents the top two joints in his fingers from bending. I assume he can't lift much and has to hold things in an awkward way.
