I should say wide angle because in order to get that shallow depth of field you'd need to be close to your subject with modern cameras. The effect in the original picture is simply a result of the nature of large format cameras when used for close portraiture. If you wanted to replicate with modern equipment just use a wide angle fast lens

you need to buy a 18mm f1.2 sony GM lens for $6000. then you need to use an AI bokeh blur tool on some software that have it now to increase the amount of blur, then you can enjoy posting it to instagram and tiktok. its the only way to be done and never achieved in the past

Large format camera and tilt the focal plane to get both eyes in focus. It's the only genuine way to achieve this. Bryan Birks discusses this in some of his videos.

Yep, these classic ultra shallow DoF portraits are all done on LF. I don't know if it works on both 4x5 and 8x10 but the effect will be more pronounced the larger you go.
The lenses used aren't even very fast. f/5.6 or 6.3 are pretty typical "wide open" apertures but because they are also 2–300mm used so close up it obliterates everything outside of the focal plane regardless.

Daily reminder that "crop factor" equivalence
a. Can be used to find effective aperture as well as focal length
b. Applies to sensor/film sizes larger than full frame
So if you see a Fujinon 210mm f/5.6 lens for 8x10 large format, you can expect it to behave similar to a 28mm f/0.75 on full frame.
So yes, a wide angle lens with very wide aperture would get you the same effect.

The picture was unlikely to be taken on an 8x10 camera, the Soviets liked their 13x18 or 9x12 inch camera, so you probably would have something like a 28mm F1.8

No, you can think whatever you want.
The point is that it's lenses that shoot onto 8×10 or thereabouts and can be tilted to keep the subject's entire face in focus that is the secret to these razor thin DoF shots.
