Why does Kodak have a different Tri-X for large format? What's different 320TX and 135/120 400TX? If I cut a sheet down and put it in the back of my SLR, would it look that different to 35mm?

my edc is an Olympus 35 RC currently with ilford hp5 pushed to 800 I got from Etsy
my weekend camera is a Pentax P3n I got from keh with a 28mm 2.8, 30-70mm, and 70-210mm currently with Cinestill 400d

see above but I mainly use Fujifilm Superia 400 since i can find the 3pks at Walmart for <$30

This was some Kodak, and I have the chaika loaded with Ilford 100 pan, and gonna use some funky expired microfilm on the Praktica.

MF: Wista w/6x9 back, my Bronica died recently, considering Mamiya C330 as replacement but also intrigued by Kowa Six. Also pic related for memes.
35mm: Konica Autoreflex T2 and Minolta XE-1 mostly. Konica C35EF and Agfa Optima 1035 as secondaries.

BW: Fomapan 100/200 and RPX25 for 4x5. CMS 20 II and FP4 for smaller formats.
Color: Ektar and Gold for both MF and 35. Velvia 100 for MF slides. I don't shoot color sheets.

Olympus Infinity aka AF-1. Found it at an antique shop for $10 so I'm running a test roll through it. If all is well I'm giving it to a buddy who wants to get into film.

Depends. Color film is always sold out.

I bought 10 of these lately and wasted two on testing some old cameras that turned out to be way off in focus and shutter timing. With the two roll waste adding a buck thirty to the real per roll cost it's still cheaper. I probably should have just left the old pieces of shit alone and used film after trying to fix them kek

Fucking based. If it doesn’t have contrast filters you’ll need some. I like ilford chemicals because they mix from concentrate and for the most part they’re interchangeable between film and paper (except developer). I also use ilford paper but there are others. Multigrade IV or RC is what you want , probably Pearl but not necessarily. An easel would be good to get those nice edge lines if you don’t have one. Trays for chemicals and tongs. But yeah just watch some video guides on how to do it and don’t be intimidated it’s actually not that hard

it's a complete bundle with timer, condensers, filters, holders for 35 and medium etc and capability to do color and at the price the guy is selling I can't really loose much, it looks I'll only need to buy an easel, a grainfinder and trays.
I was looking at foma papers but there's a lot of variety and I never haven't done my research yet, but the reviews are mixed

I think ultra fine makes paper too, so there’s other options but I’ve always just used ilford because it’s what my local store sells. You also may want a contact sheet holder or just a piece of glass if you want to make contact sheets

The prints I made in the previous thread was on fomaspeed variant 3 313 velvet (>>4103365), tho I prefer matte or glossy. Im pretty sure I used foma 400 for most of those shots. That was my first time printing so im not to sure how it copares to other papers, I wish it had more contrast but that might be my ineptitude.

Yeah these need more contrast but they’re a good start desu. They look well exposed and in focus, with decent edge lines. What filters are you using? #2 is the baseline, then go higher or lower to adjust contrast.

The intrepid has built in filters which just turns the light more blue or green iirc. But I did crank it up on one and the results were about the same. I was using xtol for developing the paper so im not sure if thats the reason why.

Ah ok that makes sense. I’m not sure what the issue is then, I’ve never used a color head for black and white but I know people do it. I think it should be red that controls the contrast but I can’t really give any advice as to precisely why they look so flat. I don’t think XTOL would be the issue though. Maybe someone else would know, or it might be on intrepid’s website. But apart from being flat I do like your prints

I'm getting convinced old as fuck TLRs are the best cameras and way better than meme cameras like huge ass Mamiya RB67 (although they're still a dream for me)
But with my clunky TLRs and its old dark 1:3,5 lenses somehow produce results I like more than when shooting with my K1000 or Nikon F50
Of course I like them too, but the Yashica D somehow is sharp and tender at the same time
Also, would like criticism
May post more eventually

I got rid of my Rolleicord because it was such a fucking attention magnet and answering the same questions from every old fart you come across gets tiring fast. Also those things have the worst ergonomics, good luck trying to get steady shots below 1/125.

They're clunky, but somehow it sometimes draws less attention to me, from my experience
It doesn't quite resemble what most people recognize as a camera, and people find it kinda odd when they realize there's someone holding an old piece of weird technology but they pay no mind to it
Anyway, I go out with it and shoot occasionaly and don't really mind other people
Some people will ask the hell you're doing and you have a quick chat, and it's been quite pleasant or at least forgettable all the times I had to talk to someone, so I don't mind

do you need 100% pure sodium hydroxide or could you use caustic soda, you know the sink stuff, with maybe 60-80% NaOH and some potassium salts and sodium chlorides?

Thanks a lot, only recently I've started liking the photos I make, and it's been a nice process
I've been photographing since 2016, always with film because somehow at the time it was the cheap option
So I bought a Pentax K1000, got my grandpa's old Yashica D and pretty much stolen my father's Nikon F50
Film is expensive where I'm from, but now I'm starting to like the results, I have a bit more money to spend on stuff like that, so it's a wild ride
This one I did with an experimental film some guys in my area make with x-ray film they slap on 120 format cartridges

I like these, but I think that Xray film you were using couldn't handle the dynamic range. It looks really dark and the highlights are blown out. Could also be a metering issue, like you were metering for the darker parts of the scene. They're still cool but technically that shouldn't be happening. Definitely an interesting look.
Makes me want to try concert photography. I think you did a good job capturing the people and the chaos of what's going on.

I still really like this shot but the focus is on the signs as opposed to the people. I like it, I think it works because you can't really see the people to begin with, but seeing it with a tighter aperture could've been interesting too. Remember that medium format has thinner depth of field than 35mm.

But yeah these are really cool man, I'll admit I'm biased toward black and white and medium format but still.

As I've said, I've only recently started actually liking my photographs, but I don't want to grow fond of them in a bad way and don't let people criticize it
It's good to hear criticism
When I started photographing I posted my stuff on /p/ and got absolutely destroyed by a guy, but he explained to me bit by bit why my pictures were shit and it was one of the most important things for me to learn about my mistakes, or even if I didn't quite agree with something, at least I got to think about the point made and consciously get to the conclusion of why I would keep doing some things (and let go of other things that were aesthetically shit, of course)
Anyway: it's an experimental film, it was my first time using it and I really liked the outcome. This film can be used from ISO 12 up to 3200, with usable results up to ISO 8000
I went for 800 because I'd like it contrasty, and it really went along with the concert's mood
As for this one >>4104840 I would have done some things differently today (like having a higher DoF, as you mentioned), but it was nice digitalizing it after almost 3 years, seeing it properly after I've come to terms with photographs that I make, and I'm glad it happened this way
Otherwise, if I'd seen it back then, I'd probably dislike it just because
'cause I thought everything I made was shit
Anyway, I'll post a couple colored ones I like, but unfortunately they're not medium format

I rarely shoot color film but I just loved Superia's colors
I have a couple films on my fridge, mainly black and white and a couple experimental color films that I'm yet to use, and now I'm waiting for 3 more rolls of Superia to arrive and a couple Kodak Golds too
It's funny how shooting color changes how we plan our photos

On a colour head cranking up yellow lowers the contrast, cranking up magenta raises it. I normally do all of one and all of the other for split grade printing. I don't think there's any point in mixing them as they just cancel out.
You can see the yellow/magenta transition in Ilford's contrast filters.

I’m really frustrated with the shit scans I get back when I have a roll of film developed. They’re the only place in town that develops film, am I likely to get anywhere if I go in and say look this just isn’t good enough or is it more likely an equipment issue on their end? The images are just shit, super small pixel count, they’re no good for looking at on anything except a phone.

Most of them literally have 2 apertures (f8 and f11) shutter speed is like 30 and bulb, and at least my agfa box has as focusing distance of at least 3 meters.
So they are pretty shitty for portrait or street but comfy for landsacapes. They are still cheap and even really old ones are probably working fine since its literally a box with a manual advance.

I've always struggled with appreciating stuff I make, and even when receiving positive feedback from friends, for example, I'm obviously grateful for their words but I always tend to kind of dismiss them because "ok, but my friends are not photographers, and their standards are average" or "sure, but they're saying this because they're my friends, no one will say my photos look like shit"
That's what I like about here: full anonimity can be bad for certain things, but it's also great for having actually honest feedbacks

Graduated test tube made of plastic
Graduated cup
Containers for the chemicals
Some hanger to dry the film
Funnel

What stock? I do caffenol so instead of a graduated test tube I just use a scale instead.
For hanging the film, just some clothespin. No funnel needed either.
Thermometer is essential though.

Like it. Images quality is great, medium format "feeling" is present as well, 80mm and 150mm 3.5 are sharp and nice as they should. It is portable, actually 645 is smaller than my Minolta A7 + Beercan.
Photos are smaller than 6x7 of course but it is more than enough for me.

Can't imagine switching to RB67 brick, where UI is bad and UX is terrible imho.

yes, rate it at 1600 and stand develop it. you can shoot at different ISOs and the stand develop will compensate for it.

you got no other option if you don't want to use a tripod and don't have a flash.

desu using the RB on a tripod is a fantastic experience, and even for novices it's super easy to handle
it's just not the easiest "freehand"-use camera (which can be improved by using a camera strap and adaptable lugs)

update on the enlarger
it's a little dusty so I need to clean the condensers and such but it's a complete bundle I only need to get a new bulb for it which is already on it's way
in the boxes with the enlarger bits and pieces
there was also some sealed soviet B&W film expired 30 years ago, a thick stack of paper labeled as "baryte" (I think its gelatin silver paper?) in a blackout bag, a box of empty slide holders of german make and a mint soviet sverdlovsk 4 light meter (not sure if it works but I got the diode to blink and the battery was outside of the unit so it is very likely undamaged from leaking etc.). Oh and a thick development tank with two spools.
The lightmeter alone sells second hand for like 30USD around here and it's complete with original box, leaher case, string and two manuals so I think I'm breaking even even if it costs me a day or two of cleaning and a bulb. I read there are battery packs on aliexpress that can supply the lightmeter so I'll be ckecking that out.
I hope it prints ok, i still need to pick the papers however.

I'm not sure I agree with that.
Shooting at 1 or 2 stops faster than the film's nominal speed is 1 or 2 stops of margin in the shadows you no longer have. Accidentally underexposing a 400 speed film metered at 400 is recoverable, underexposing a shot pushed to 1600 is probably going to ruin it.
In addition all that extra development is going to push the brightest highlights off the scale. A shot metered for the shadows but with a lot of highlights is just gonna look blown out.

Pentax K1000 my dad had in the 80s through the 90s/00s when we were growing up before he got a digital p&s

not as special but still neat is a Canon FTb QL with a 50mm, 28mm, and 35-100mm in a leather camera bag with the original manuals/docs my aunt gave me when my grandpa passed away. I wasn't that close to my grandpa that's why it's not as special to me as the k1000 is but a sweet setup nonetheless

Got some old film from my grans house which was her dads, so my Great grandfather, anyway I have some of his rolls of film which were never developed and of course I wish to develop them myself.

Does anybody know anything about these films? Can anyone offer me advice developing them? As you can see there is little info on the roll and one has none at all. The kodak one doesnt even say its asa. I've developed a lot of my own film but never deviated from standard b/w so am wondering if there is anything which might be different that I should know

I have no idea how old these rolls are so am very curious to see what is on them.

There are labs that specialize in old film developing. Definitely don't try to do these before you are reasonably experienced with current film developing.
Rodinal 1+100 1 hour stand development will give you best chances, probably better than going for accurate times for when these films were in date. Gonna warn you Ilford pan f is sort of infamous for latent image fading--give it even more time just to be sure.

USSR film might actually still be good if stored okay. Some of it (esp in 120 or sheet film) preserves better than you might expect. Baryte paper is usually fiber based photo paper.
Not all Sverdlovsk 4 versions have the same calibration scale. look up the various versions because GOST/ASA scale changed on those.
Good meter otherwise. You can get new production mercury batteries from russian sites/aliexpress.

My Bronica experienced a sudden death and I was thinking of changing to something else anyway. I thought about the Mamiya but I really don't want 645, it's not a size that I like. Also my P6 Meyer 2.8/80 absolutely dumps all over any Zenzanon I have (managed to test as much with the Kiev) and I really would like to put it to work.

Other than that Kowa Six also seems like an interesting option, the fixed film back is not an issue to me. Also maybe Mamiya C, but TLR's really are not my thing.

I researched a bit and the main cause for blurry focus seems to actually be a degraded mirror

did semi stand dev (1:100 for 60 minutes, four agitations of 1 minute at the start and then every 20 minutes, 2% vinegar stop bath, 12 min fixing)

loaded a roll of Ilford hp5+ and I'm pushing it 2 stops in a Canon FTb(n) QL. I've only used this camera once and I didn't real understand what it's capable of but my other cameras can't or won't let me set the iso to 1600 so I figured it's a good opportunity to take it for another spin.

The price of film and developing/scanning costs at labs are only getting higher and higher and I think it's getting to me bros. This might be the end of the line for me (at least until Kodak gets their shit together and things start to cool down), time to find a new digital camera and start shooting with that instead.

The path is also distracting from the birds, because it leads our eyes away from them
If the pic wasn't so monochromatic and had more whites and blacks I think the birds would stand out more and make it more interesting

Yeah it's definitely not cheap. I've started going to a lab in my city that offers 1hr of drum scanning for $55. If I choose to only scan and take the 3F/TIFF files then go and edit them at home I can get through quite a few negatives otherwise if I'm editing them there I can get through maybe 10 photos in 1 hour.

Hello, friends. Noob here. Need some help with sanity-checking my "to-buy" list for developing 35mm B&W film. The rolls have sentimental pictures which I can't afford to lose, so I'd appreciate some help.

The rolls are: 2x B&W Shanghai GP3 400 ISO and 1x B&W AGFA APX 400 ISO.

I am going to be buying the following:
- Peterson plastic developing tank (seems "universal," i.e. 126/127/120/220/35mm film support)
- A dark changing bag made for this as a "darkroom"
- Kodak D-16 developer and F-24 fixer formula from a local seller
- Thermometer
- Plastic containers to mix the powder formula
- Dark plastic bottles to store the liquids in
- A can opener to pop open the film roll (those film retrievers are expensive)

That's it. Am I missing anything? Will the developer and fixer formula work well?
I'd like to have these pictures in the best possible quality.
I also haven't yet found a good product to put the resulting negatives in, archival style (acid-free, etc.) Any tips?

Make sure when you buy the tank that it actually comes with a spiral. It's also worth it to buy at least one extra, depending on the size of the tank. If you have some old useless film, I recommend practicing feeding it into the dev spiral with the lights on until you feel comfortable with it. I would add to your set:
>Stopper (you can use water too but stopper will make sure no leftover dev will make it into the fixing step, as dev contaminates fixer and shortens its lifespan)
>Set of weighted film hanging clips (you can use clothespins too but proper ones make your life easier)
>Wetting agent like Ilfotol or Photo-flo (especially if your tap water is hard)

For negatives get a bunch of pergamine archive sheets. Dev and fixer will work as long as your follow the instructions and proper times. Fixer is less time and temperature sensitive than dev, also remember that fixer is reusable so don't dump that shit. A good sign of fixer starting to get old and spent is when it starts smelling like an old sweaty sock.

Also film drying clips could be replaced with clothes ones, if you have them.
Retriever could be replaced with exposed film strip.

D-16 is high-contrast developer, I guess it will be better to replace it with something for fine-grainish.

A little. You need to stop the developer to not add it to your (reusable) fix dilution. You can use citric acid from the grocery store instead of specialized stopper, it is almost the same.

Depends of tap water quality you have in your region. It makes water softer, removes calcic drops from dried negatives and adds anti-static effect to your negatives.

Yeah. There are two major points which can affect the end result: film and developer.
Do some investigation before buying it. Developer can increase grain, make it smooth, rise up contrast, rise up sharpness etc.

there are some methods where you wet the lead of another roll, stick it in and then yank it out and it sometimes works
if you can get the lead out, put it back in a camera, then take 10 or more exposures in pure darkness (more to be safe), you can then use the rest of the roll

Not him and I've never tried a Leica, but for having used a variety of old manual cameras, there is a noticeable difference between run of the mill consumer camera and higher end professional cameras, mostly in reliability and easiness of use.
The M6 is a classic model which seems to make your workflow very smooth and easy, not to mention the aesthetics and the fact that it's an actual investment. So all in all it seems like a very worthwhile camera, been lusting after an M2 or 3 myself for a while now.

this is just my opinion/story:
in 2020 lockdown i bought a fuji x-s10. used it maybe 5 times, wasnt too into it.
then i got a minolta srt-101 film camera and used that a bunch more, really liked film but the camera was a bit janky.
then i bought a fuji x-e2 in early 2022 because i thought i would use something lighter and that digital was much better than film due to cost, time to see photos etc. used it once ever.
bought a leica m2 like 4 months ago. i have not even picked any of the other cameras up off my shelf since and ive been going out at least twice a week to shoot for many hours at a time. it absolutely makes me want to get out and take more photos. i want to hear the shutter click and feel the advance lever. it really was a game changer for me. i dont know if it was because its a leica, or it was my first rangefinder, but i fucking love it

If you want a Leica, then nothing will tickle that itch other than a Leica. If you want a rangefinder, I highly recommend considering a Bessa r2/r3/r4 depending on your FL preferences. Built in meter but otherwise fully manual, fantastic viewfinder, manual frame selector, 1/2000th max ss, 1/125 x-sync, all metal construction, at least 1/2 the price of an m6 if not more.

5 is a good camera the 6 is better as it fixes a few issues with the 5 out of the box, though the stuff that happens to the 5 can be fixed with a full CLA which honestly isn't hard with a few specialized tools. Even a fat American trucker can do it, what's stopping you.

Yes and no. The earlier models, 1950-1970 yes those were better, but not by model progression, by build date. Also a lot of the earlier Soviet stuff isn't built to Leica 28.8mm standard that didn't come about until the 50s. A lot of my Leica and VL M39 lenses will mount correctly on my Zorki-5, pic related, but on even my Leningrad they don't quit line up properly.

I just want to say I'm so happy I gave this orphaned Z5 a second life, this poor thing was used and abused, rode hard in Hong Kong and put away wet. I spent about 4 days fixing all of its problems and it's probably the best rangefinder in my arsenal, so much I pressed it into front line service. If you're on the fence about a Zorki rangefinder, get a later one made in 1960-1970 that has been fully sorted out like mine. The shutter on my 5 is as quiet as my Leica IIIc.

I'll address the Kiev series here. These aren't your standard FED/Zorki cameras.

The common point of failure on these is the ribbons that operate the shutter cocking mechanism and pull the second curtain up. Most of them were too tight from the factory. They eventually will fail no matter how well you take care of it, mine did.

The best course of action, is if you're really set on a Kiev/Contax camera, buy one and send it out for CLA to Oleg Khalyavin in February when he sets up shop again. Factor that into your cost of the camera. Or buy one from Yuri Boguslavky at Fedka and ask if the shutter has been replaced. If the shutter has been replaced, then the repairman likely fixed the curtain tension during the install. I had to do it on my Zorki-5 when I did my CLA. Fedka and Oleg are basically the two big names in FSU Rangefinders when it comes to repair and sales, which is why over the past couple of years they have taught me everything I know about them and why I was able to CLA my Zorki-5, pic related. Yuri and both Olegs are the go-to for FSU camera repair. I shill the fuck out of them for a reason, because I built almost my entire Soviet system with either their advice or their sales.

A true CLA, clean, lube and adjustment, requires a full disassembly and replacement of wear items and usually this means shutters. Many of these Soviet cameras sat for 40 years, plan accordingly.

They did not even reply to my message about fixing my Kiev 60 with a broken frame counter. Honestly I would trust anyone East of Görlitz to do this shit even if you paid them. What I've found is if you don't have a tech in your own country willing to do this, you're shit out of luck. Testing 1953 Kiev III on Foma 200, slow speeds broken, shot only at 1/125. I like the look of the lens, also it's not the sharpest. Very enjoyable camera to shoot, although it has a few quirks that I'll need to look out for next time shooting it.

I've wanted to get a half frame just for the ability to shoot 72 shots on a roll. The tradeoff of smaller negs seems worth it for a very casual camera when you're out with friends, you know?

I wanted an AGAT 18k for myself but there's no way if I'm with people I'm gonna hand that to someone and have it just work. I do have a regular P&S but if I could have the same thing, only shooting half frames, it'd be nice.

I seem to recall some labs saying they didn't charge more for half frame but I know that's not all of them.

For half frame I think that the only realistic choices are the AGAT 18k (Its a clusterfuck to load and use) a Chaika, a Yashica Samurai (Good luck getting one without mold) or maybe a Petri Half 7. You can get also a PEN F or a Ricoh Autohalf but those are too expensive for what they are.

The Chaika, Petri and PEN F are the ones that I think are easier to use.

I actually never shot Foma 400, but yeah, 200 isn't too grainy, depends on the developer.
This time I used D-76 in 1+1 dilution. Pic related is another roll of Foma 200, but developed in Ilfosol 3. Came out a little grainier.

Should it be always on (given there are batteries) and just by pointing the camera at the subject you get a reading?

I've bought 2 new batteries for mine and inserter them correctly, but even with them in place I can't get a read from the meter. Not single red dot on the side.
I don't have the coin battery cover and from pictures online it seems that's part of the contact to turn the meter on.

Could someone please try using the meter without the battery cover and let me know how it goes?
This meter would be very useful for me since I don't carry a phone or other light-measuring equipment.

couldn't tell you, I've really only shot the 1 roll so far, currently shooting gold 200 in the pentax but I'm just doing box speed.
I do have another xp2 roll but idk if I should bother push/pulling it

I fucking wish I had that kind of money, then I could shoot film way more regularly and go to more interesting places than the woods near my house for photo opportunities.
