>>4105818You will be more likely to be hired as an assistant photographer if you have a full frame camera with at least 36mp, the two essential pro zooms (24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8) and a dedicated flash head. This is close to the equipment the average pro uses and can produce photos the actual photographer will be glad to include with his own work. A portrait-oriented prime lens with an aperture of f1.7 or faster and a focal length of 50 to 100mm can be a decent addition. If you can snag an A7RIII for a good price ($1k or less) I'd definitely get that.
For sports you want even more zoom but I've only ever seen job openings for assistant event photographers
You will also need a portfolio of photos of the kind of thing you are trying to get a job photographing. This proves you know how to use a camera and won't shoot an entire wedding at f2.8, 1/8s, ISO 400.
