How the fuck does depth of field work at f1.4

No.4110530 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
I recently bought an 85mm f1.4 and used it for the first time today at a cosplay event. The event was indoors so lighting wasn't great and I shot wide open at f1.4. The camera set shutter speed to 1/125 and iso anywhere from 100-400.
Question 1:
For most of my pictures, I was far enough away from the cosplayer(s) to get their heads down to roughly their thighs in frame and manually set the focus point to one of their eyes. Photos looked sharp on the screen but when I zoomed in I noticed that their body was slightly of focus. This is due to very shallow DoF right? Is there any way around this other than stopping down?
Question 2:
When I took pictures of 2 or more cosplayers standing right next to each other at f1.4, I wasn't able to get both in focus. I could see very clearly on the screen that only 1 face was in focus, despite them standing basically next right to each other. Why is this?
