They're considered "bad" because they are a bit more accurate, and their cameras are extremely sharp and typically paired with extremely sharp lenses that reveal detail the human eye is usually glad to gloss over. All the nasty green, blue and yellow tones that actually exist in skin, all the dull browns and greenish yellows that actually exist in nature, all of it needs edited in post. Even hardwood furniture can look a little bad. Sony got endless shit for this until more people started shooting raw and fucking with every photo in lightroom.

Other cameras (pentax, nikon, canon) have slight inaccuracies that do what you were going to do anyways.

Also IMHO most sony (and sigma) lenses do terrible shooting into light and lose almost all their contrast which leads to 3d pop/microcontrast memers shitposting

sort of related but are sigma art lenses good and are they even comparable to sony g master lenses?
Most youtubers say sigma art lenses are comparable to first party lenses but after watching more and more youtubers I've realized they are all shills and rarely ever say negative things about the stuff they "test".

For decades Sigma offered good optics with inferior mechanics/build and the occasional protocol problems. That's the real price to pay for going third party, the risk that it stops working with a new body. Nowadays that's been ameliorated a bit with upgradeable firmwares.

They're very sharp. Still bad with flare and therefore contrast. I think most nikkor, pentax HD D FA/DA, and canon L glass does better than either. Look at the sample pics and see for yourself. Ignore youtube. You can not evaluate thousands of dollars of camera gear in a twice- compressed 12mp video.

Or just use common sense and realize there's a reason sony has zeiss make some of their lenses

Been thinking about pulling the trigger on a sigma. I really want to get into macro and torn between the 90mm g lens/105mm sigma art. Both produce good images imo and the g has oss but im not super concerned with that so im leaning towards the sigma.

Dare I suggest a completely different option?
Get an enlarger lens and some bellows.
The field curvature is practically zero on those. I was going to get that setup for film digitizing a while ago, ended up taking a different avenue but that's a great option for macro.

Off camera flash is the most useful tool for macro, allows you to use much exposure speeds (you can still shoot at 1\200, or whatever the fastest flash sync your body can handle, the exposure will be controlled by how long the flash fired for, which is much faster) and get super high contrast, sharp photos reliably.

Not necessarily. If you own a camera that can do in-body focus stacking, it is a very useful feature for still subjects. Focusing rails are a thing, but manual ones can be tedious, and not everyone wants to shell out for an automated rail (or build one).

Ive seen some videos of those had held flash bulbs and im looking at those. Also looked into on cam flash with the diffusion cover. Insects are gonna be my primary subjects.

Just use a normal on camera flash with either wireless transmitters or an extension cable. You'll want the flash a lot closer and from a better angle than being stuck on top of your camera.

this seems to be the reason my smegma 18-50 2.8 worked fine on my D80 but on my D90, I had to use AFC for the AF to work with that lens

color science is just another form of pixel peeping for people that can't be bothered to shoot raw or learn how to edit
i honestly find greater variances in color across different lenses, than i do across different sensors

Why would I want to *have to* shoot hard drive vampire raw and let it suck my life away in lightroom when I can just use a camera with better SOOC colors that happens to cost about the same as everything else anyways?

if you genuinely care about color, you'd shoot raw + edit
you sort of care, not enough to put effort towards it though, so you have to pick camera brands based on color to make up for your laziness
nikon and sony have the most control over sooc jpgs anyways

I take thousands of photos a year. I'd rather just not bother having every last photo in raw if i don't have a specific artistic editing goal. Mandatory editing and setup just to get ok colors is for technicians, not photographers. You know even the best SOOC colors are merely ok? When they're bad enough to require editing, why bother?

Good SOOC, zero-setup jpegs are for people with more photos to take than settings to play with.

That's partly true, but not all the time. Sometimes my AF macro will perfectly nail focus on an insect's eye, which is very useful for spray and pray in burst mode.
It's much harder to manually focus on something that's constantly on the move, like a dragonfly on a blade of grass swaying in the wind or a beetle running on the ground
