how do you all find inspiration for your photos in your town? I am new to this so not sure, I suppose I should just wander around? Hopefully people don't find me strange just taking photos with my iPhone?

It actually gets easier with a real camera because shutter and aperture can vary creative effects and it feels very natural (and happens quickly) if you have physical controls. Also crazy long focal lengths, physical filters, and wide angles help find new photos in old things.

Also don't be dumb and hold off on a "real camera" and end up with a top shelf pro rig. Those are for people that machine gun snapshits during a wedding and then salvage even the awful exposures into high quality prints. If you're not making big prints you don't need big gear. All you really need is a much smaller, cheaper one like an old olympus OM-D E-M5. They're like $300.

Looking on Ebay right now (I'm welcome to any other suggestions you might have) and this seems to be true for the body. What lens would you recommend to go with it?

If you can snag a camera for <$200, you could buy cheaper prime lenses to suit your budget

Or buy an all in one normal lens like the panasonic lumix g 12-35mm f2.8 or olympus zuiko 12-40mm f2.8 for $400.

These aren't the best, but they're more than good enough for social media, wallpapers, medium sized prints, etc. Lenses are the most expensive part of real cameras. Bodies are a meme.

If you live in a city people usually just look right through you, I don't think they even see the guy standing on the side of the street with a camera. You might get the occasional old people striking up a convo or people passing by, making a funny face for the camera and saying something, but that's pretty much it.
It took me some time on the street to realize that though. It's a bit scary at first, then as you grow confidence and get bolder, you realize that people around just don't fucking care.

In a similar situation. I take photos with my phone, but I think it looks quite weird. I think I would feel more comfortable taking photos with a camera when I learn how to use them properly.

In terms of inspiration, I generally don't walk around my area much unless I'm walking to or from work, I recently made an effort to actually take in my scenery, walk different routes, and take photos of even the most mundane things.

This is a big deal for me as well. The tactile feeling helps a lot with taking photos.

Deals come up locally but all in all, what should be the cheapest Fuji bodies (x-pro 1, x100) etc. are now way too expensive for what they are. I'd look for an X-E2/3 or an X-T20/T2 if you want to go that route.

yeah, the qualifier "if you live in a city" is key here. in the suburbs people are waaaaay more aware of what you're doing. it's actually incredible how easy it is to take pictures in a city versus in a suburban town. it's 100% easy mode in a city.
your best bet if you want to take street photos / photos of people in the suburbs is finding events where there are larger than average gatherings of people. then people tend to be more focused on what's going on and less on you. the higher density of people the easier it is.
