Question for old pro fags
As a professional, which time was the best time in digital photography since it's beginning? let's say from early 2000. maybe late 90's. Just for genuine curiosity, tell me some story.

No, in commercial photography like in OP's pictures you're selling physical objects, so you want pictures of those exact objects. If the training dataset of the AI model doesn't contain a photo of that exact object it can't generate what you need. So you need a photographer to take a picture in the first place.

The real competition in that space is CGI, but that's a more level playing field, you're still paying creative professionals for their time, and the better they are at their job the more you have to pay them.

AI will probably take over stock photography, though. But the bottom fell out of that market years ago, so nothing of value will be lost as far as pro photogs are concerned.

i don't know how people don't realize this? AI is not going to replace any photography that depends on the uniquness of the subject. people aren't about to start AI generating family portraits, school portraits, wedding pictures, etc. people aren't going to start AI generating photos of new products. people aren't going to start AI generating photos for photojournalism.

stock 'photographers' are fucked though

There is no such thing as a professional photographer.

There are commercial photographers, there are fine art photographers, there are photojournalists. Photojournalism is the closest thing to an actual profession, as it has a code of ethics, but no licensure, ergo it's not a profession.

Protip: if you have to say you're a professional, you aren't one. You don't here someone say, "oh, I'm a professional doctor." You either are a doctor or you aren't. You're a lawyer, or you aren't one. These are real professions, because there's a barrier to entry, there's licensure.

I've always thought the clear difference between pro and amateur was is your work done under a payment for your work.
if you get paid you're a professional. at least that moment.
if you're not then you're an amateur.
but since we've became much easier to make and distribute portfolio of our selves
some gerne of photographies have now a lot of part-time professionals.

I still remember back in the day when digital cameras arrived and before usable cameras on phones. Mert and Marcus were doing their thing and their was massive hype around their photos, entire forums of people trying to figure how to edit like that. Fashion photography was rich and glamouress. Hardly anybody had good cameras and they cost thousands, it felt a genuine chance to make it if you could get these looks.

Absolutely nobody could have known at the time how much cellphone cameras would improve. It still seems impossible today that they are mogging pro cameras but they are. As soon as 8 billion people had a good camera on them at all times and could click a button and put a photo on the internet everything changed forever. Huge oversupply and devaluation of photos, fashion photography no longer stood out vs the massive surge in content, also the influencer was born. Now fashion photography is reduced to the level of a McDonald’s worker, quick throwaway content, done cheap and fast as that’s all it can be now. It’s been many years since I’ve seen anything get the hype like back in the day. Fashion editorials . Com is just endless nobody’s making the exact same thing thousands of times over. It’s just a cheap commodity now and back down to the ranks of other photography genres.
It will always exist, it’s just not going to make you a famous millionaire anymore.

Further to this, I think high end fashion editorials is one place AI could shine.
The high end brands should be pushing the limits of technology/whats possible on their editorials and also are allowed to be far more creative than the usual generic ecom stuff.

I have a feeling thats where AI will begin in fashion photography.
Ecom can already be done by workers being paid mcdonalds tier wages so it would be hard to make much savings there.
