Lytro Light Field Camera

Thoughts on the Lytro camera? Specifically the first model.
They are selling for around $100 on eBay.
Can it be used with modern equipment? I assume I can pull single plane pics, or save the focus movement as a short mov

The Illum looks really cool. But yeah I don't really see the point. I looked into getting one awhile ago, I can't remember now if the software is still available or will even run on Windows 10/11, but I don't see the point. You might be able to make cool gifs with them, but other than that the ability to shift focus feels kind of underwhelming

Apparently they weren't every effective for big scenes. So a lot of the sample images they showed were of small objects, close ups, or narrow views. Like food, flowers, one friend standing a couple feet behind another.

There was some editorial recently about companies/teams who were fully behind products that while having some revolutionar feature, were doomed to fail. Lytro was one of the products cited.

good idea, awful output, software, and lock in. fairly certain you can't even post interactive images from those on the web anymore since they shut down their online sharing platform

Thing they were working towards that I thought was cool was being able to shoot video and removing image data outside of a certain distance range. Resulting in a green-screen type effect without the issues of green-screens. (can't wear colors matching the backdrop, backdrop color reflecting off subject, etc.)

what format does it output? as long as i can view it, move that focus slider, and at bare minimum do a screen capture, that will work for my needs.
ive been toying with the idea of making 5x5 prints of the same portrait but under different lighting conditions, if I can do the same with different focal lengths, that would be neat as well.

their cinema camera had this effect built in. only 1 ever made, only available for lease, only 1 movie made, and now the tech is owned by google.
im surprised tesla doesnt use anything similar for their self driving cameras. maybe thats what google will use it for.

you can only post images online in either JPEG, GIF, or maybe WEBM since the applet won't work anymore though

perspective/focus shift is limited especially on the first model, but if the software works on your os it's interesting to play with.
Some phones have a similar portrait mode but the lytros have a true lightfield sensor and can "look around" the subject a bit better.

if someone managed to reverse engineer the format and write a program to manipulate the photos it would make for an extremely interesting artistic camera to do cool shit with.
