Explain 28mm to me. Always feels and looks so subpar compared to 35mm. At the same time also not wide angle enough to look cool like 24mm.

It's a general purpose focal length, which is why most mobile phone cameras use a 28mm equivalent. It's wide enough for capturing an entire landscape, or you can photograph subjects near the camera without the background appearing way too small like what happens with super wide angles, for something like photographing your family in front of something. And it's not wide enough that faces start to appear super distorted. Plus, it's short, meaning small lenses if you don't care about a wide aperture.

That said, if you don't like a focal length, nobody is forcing you to use it. You don't need to understand a focal length - if you don't like it, just use the ones you enjoy the most.

35mm is closer to 40mm which is the Chad focal length.

28 mm is the widest focal length that has no visible distortions. Wider than that you have to deal with the UWA perspective more so in rectilinear but fisheye has its own problems.

I can’t use 28mm; I think it stems from the fact it doesn’t snap into focus like a 35mm or a 50mm, but the depth of field isn’t so great like a 21mm or 24mm to mask focussing errors.

It's the focal length every faggot uses because it's the default for phones and it's the default for streetshitters that just imitate winogrand, because 28mm was "the winogrand lens" for a lot of photography judents. It also distorts the fuck out of everything and makes it look kind of bad/ugly, while not being as dramatic as 24mm and shorter.

35mm to 50mm is closer to a natural perspective. 24mm is sweeping landscapes and tasteful fisheye. Above 50mm is zoom. 28mm is just boring. it's like a lens for a CCTV camera. It's to get stuff in the frame, but not well. It's the kind of focal length people would use as a junk find but not pay good money for.

That depends on the lens construction and sensor size. One thing to note is that 28mm is usually on the wider end of most standard zoom lenses, and since most standard zoom lenses tend to be weakest on wider end, it leads to newbies never experiencing what a good wide lens can offer.

You shouldn't compare zoom lenses against primes, wide angle zooms (and UWA as well) are horrible riddled with all sorts of distortions, skewed corners, CA and everything you can think of.
Newbie tip: if you want wide angle or UWA go prime, accept no substitute.

Yeah, I sold my 24-70 for a 35mm prime and I do not miss the other FLs
I do combine with with a 70-200 and a 20mm prime though

Funny, I almost did that but missed the 24-70 so badly I sold the 35mm instead, and don't intend to touch a 70-200 ever again. Stupid massive lens even on crop sensors, and it gets left at 200 all day.

Look at >>4115155 and realize that it's misleading. Any focal length would result in usable compositions, even if only the distance was chosen appropriately.

The wider the focal length is, the more foreground is in the image, and hence the closer you often have to get to fill the foreground, for example, to achieve a reduced and selected image content again.

the obvious use case i can see is with street photography. at f/8 or f/11 your hyperfocal distance is pretty close and you can quickly snap photos at a relatively close distance completely focus-free

You can try and do SOMETHING with it but it often comes off as narcissistic because there's so much in the frame that any incredibly personal messages you tried to convey don't always register because the arcane puzzle could be one of several things. It's like burying your central point between several unrelated rants about sony and cats. The distraction is not great enough to be avoided and it is too easy to include it. The end result is a bad photo. A two paragraph essay that demands further clarification. It neither demands nor supports brevity. "Oh, but you don't get it, because you aren't me". Ultrawides are more artistically challenging. Telephotos are more conducive to storytelling. 28 to 50, however, are nothing more than a leica owner's cope because they can't get a more portable telephoto length, so they resort to sneaking a smaller lens into peoples faces.

Exactly! Take 75mm and 50mm and 35mm shots from the same subject distance. You'll get the same perspective distortion / affect on features, and get images with varying amounts of environmental context. Since we all know portraits aren't simply just headshots.
