Why is it so hard to simply view photos?

People say always say flickr but if you use it on mobile 3/4 of your screen is menus, borders, and a fucking sign-up banner. I just want to be able to send a link to someone and have them be able to view my photos in-browser.

The desktop sites are nearly as bad. How come I can full-screen pornhub with a single click but to view a photo without my tabs, searchbar, and bookmarks taking up half the screen I have to F11? I don't trust my grandma to go through all these steps to see my photos full-screen.

Maybe Picdrop is what you are looking for. It’s an online tool for professionals to share their pictures with editors. The person viewing the pictures does not need an account. There is an upload cap on the free plan though and being able to create a lot of folders costs.

the question of why is rather easy: If you allow users to freely upload images, and particularly if you allow high definition images and don't apply heavy handed compression on the server, you're going to run into high hosting costs. And to make it worse, most of those images won't even be looked at again by anyone, but you're stuck hosting them if you want your users to keep using your services. It's your promise to the users. Additionally, some of the images are going to get very high traffic, further increasing hosting fees. Meanwhile, where's your source of revenue? If you let the users easily link to your images and embed them anywhere they want, you can't get ad revenue from the people looking at them. You can't even collect any good user data to sell about those people. If you make looking at the images too convenient, same issue. I remember when imgur was started by a reddit commenter saying he was going to make the image hosting site that did it right. And it did for a few years, but slowly all the bloat that the site currently has crept in due to the reasons mentioned above.

picdrop linked above seems like it might stand the test of time if you're willing to pay for such a service, otherwise something like google photos is probably going to be good since they're specialists at extracting user data and don't need to worry about ads too much.

that's not the worst idea I've ever heard, there's for sure a niche to be filled here between the more corporate solution of picdrop and the old hat data harvesters

I could be interested in contributing to the codebase of something like that

I'm using a selfhosted solution like Lychee. It's the most elegant looking one I've found and it's the least amount of bloat. You can share a single album and people would enter and nothing besides the pictures is there.

You'd need to host a VPS and have a domain but the install itself is easy if you're using yunohost.

You forgot to mention the increasing moderation costs as illegal images continue to get uploaded that make you liable and no legalese or fine print will protect you
