Absolute delusion from whoever that is. I notice a dramatic drop in quality in my finished exports between PNGs/TIFFs/etc. and JPGs even when the JPG is at the highest possible quality, let alone the insane levels of compression they're suggesting as ideal. Already doing JPG at say 95% is a huge reduction in size compared to lossless, miniscule relative to the internet speeds anyone worth accommodating would have in current year. The only time where I'd ever fiddle with a quality not right near maximum is if I was trying to game the way additional compression is handled on some sites, but I don't use dogshit services like Instagram anyways where you might want to.

jpeg codec is horribly outdated. Same as early video compressions. It was made for crt monitors that had pitch blacks and invisible black to shadows transition, so it prefers midtones and highlights at the expense of shadows. It also requires exif data to correctly state colour space, or it'll go haywire. None of the new codecs require this. They offer better compression, and better accuracy, but nobody uses them simply because nobody cares.

Nah...png is absolute shit for the web and I'm tired of people using it. It's only good for simple vector illustrations. RAW out of your camera, TIFF for permanent backup. But after editing is complete JPEG is absolutely fine for display.

Use better software and stop pixel peeping. IQ differences at higher quality levels, exported from PS with the correct color profile, are not dramatic. They are difficult to see at all for anyone viewing the image as intended. I would never store finals or backups in that format, nor use that format to make large prints. But I don't believe for one second you would do as well in a double blind test as you think you would.

he's right about not using png but he's just being pedantic after that. it's fine to not be so autistic that you start reading about fucking chroma subsampling and choosing quality levels based on the content of the image. just stick with 92%, you get a significant reduction in file size without a noticeable reduction in quality.

I've just checked this on two monitors, laptop, and my phone. When opened side by side, jpeg is clearly weaker, less saturated and detailed.

I only realized after I posted. I tried to figure out what the fuck is going on but it's beyond me. he has "argb" in the name but the png doesn't look to be adobe rgb encoded. I don't know what kind of witchcraft file he uploaded but I eventually gave up on trying to make them look equivalent. I don't think the problem is jpeg, though.

It's colour count. PNG simply has colours that can not be present in a jpeg format. Converting it into jpeg will just discard them, and you're left with banding, artefacts and false colours. You don't even need a good monitor to see that, but I guess that there are people on /p/ that are inherently incompetent.
