DSLR (with OVF) in 2023

I really want to get a DSLR again. I've had a mirrorless for a while now, and while it's great, I miss the OVF quite a bit for some reason.

What system would be best to invest in? Ideally I want a system that's still made lenses for. I'm guessing both Canon and Nikon no longer make new bodies or new lenses for their DSLR platforms? What am I left with, would Pentax FF or APS-C with its IBIS be good?

Pentax has a god awful lens selection. Almost fucking nothing. Even for vintage lenses, unless you mean the shitty ones like lower than kit zoom tier 80s crap that makes an iphone 6 look like it has good IQ. Yes, their primes are bad too. It took them decades to fix the unusable CA on the 100mm macro and the FA limiteds are all so soft imatest can't even get an MTF figure for the FF edges.

inb4 pentax users insist it's all fine even though they pay sony prices for the absolute crap instead of just buying a nikon DSLR and enjoying mountains of stupid cheap AF/AF-D lenses.

I kinda wanna buy into a D700 again... i sold mine for $550 and now they're about $250-300 and miss having a DSLR, can't justifty 800$++ for a D600 or $1200++ for a D800

Pentax will never have as good lenses or as large selection as Nikon or canon. I'd go with canon myself as it offers better value.

If you really miss the ovf, use a film camera, the ovf is so much better than any DSLR. Better yet, get medium format, it's like looking into another world.

This. You will have spares available for at least 8 years for most of the latest EF L lenses, you can still buy them new, and you have a massive supply of like-new lenses on the used market, while these lenses will even work on RF cameras. I'm sure it's similar for Nikon for any lens that doesn't have the screwdriver drive.

I'm not OP, just wanted to chime in and say that for me it's not just the OVF. I'm all about a dirt-cheap camera that I can carry everywhere without hesitation: No protruding parts and thus no flappy screen, no "flat+prodruding grip" mirrorless body design, no battery hunger, yet very capable. For me, this is a Magic Lantern aided Canon 6D.
I have no more love for any camera than the 6D, which may already be because I'm anchored in the Canon EF system, but I also like the EG-S matte screen. Yes, the autofocus system is limited to the center focus field. Yes, there's the Canon 5D4 that's the nominal Canon star in this category and also great. Yet, irrationally, The 5D4 is not as intimate to me. And I don't warm up to Canon RF and Sony E cameras. I really only reach for better cameras when necessary i.e. where the 6D is really too limited. If there were Magic Lantern and replacement screens for the 6D2, I'd certainly add one, even though the sensor is not up to date.
For a single camera, I would of course bite the bullet and have it be a mirrorless camera, maybe the Fuji X system if the hobby is the main focus.

in the works i'm sure, there's no reason the mirror can't be a dedicated EVF and AF sensor, although I reacon this will be on film SLR rather than DSLR, mainly to gain the benefit of liveview for film to minimise film wastage in the current age of high film demand and lower supply

It's a third-party firmware that runs besides the Canon firmware. The community reverse engineered cameras to run custom programs and by this enabled Cinema recording features such as Zebras, Focus Peaking, added formats and codecs. At some point they've also added photo perks such that I've experienced camera driven focus bracketing for e.g. focus stacking first with their firmware. It also features interval or timed shots, custom bulb timers, both usable for e.g. startrails or astro. There are auto modes for hdr bracketing or ETTR. There's automatic lens calibration, too. I.e. it brought and for me even introduced many features to Canon DSLR that Canon only introduced with their mirrorless system.

I don't know of any. The Fuji X100 series has hybrid viewfinders at least. In terms of autofocus, Canon DualPixel is as close to mirrorless as it can get. In terms of EVF features and IBIS, Pentax is the best bet.

That would be the most hipsteresque film gadget of time, but it would be really error-prone (think of e.g. calibration) and far too expensive.

are there things like that for nikons?
It sucks not having focus peeking like on my friend's snoy when using non AF lenses
The viewfinder doesn't have micro/split prisms like film cameras have that help focusing

Build quality is one part, but also having dedicated buttons for all the standard things you need also helps. The sensor and color science also work well for what I tend to shoot, to where I don't do as much postprocessing as I would when I shot Sony. Smaller file sizes also helped in that aspect. It's just a really fun shooter.

He's right you know. "Pentaxians" have a bad rap for insisting that low quality lenses are fine. Muh character, soul, real photographers dont care, etc. While they pay out the ass and spend more than a snoy/zeisstard on shit that does the same job as a nikon d800 with ancient AF-D lenses that cost 1/4 as much.

Not likely. 90s proto-DSLR film cameras are some of the cheapest film cameras you can buy, it would be foolish to invest in developing a brand new camera to compete in that market segment.

More likely it will be a new production run of the K1000 and some manual lenses.

I started shooting film on a Pentax and when i stepped up to digital i went Canon. And I used to sell cameras right after college 5 years ago Pentax was not a good eco system to get into and it still isn't from what I've seen it still isn't good. I'm not sure what you mean by not making cameras and lenses that aren't mirrorless. Most pros are still shooting with SLRs, Nikon and Canon didn't stop making them when they made what's been called a crossover between a point and shoot and slr, it's seen as an entry level thing to alot of photogos and there are definitely levels to them like anything else. With that though, I still want one. Any way, I shoot on Canon and love it, best bang for your buck and I like the way it represents light through its glass, the image is more appealing to me. Nikons seem catch the light differently through their glass and while it's not bad it's just slightly different from what I prefer.

The reasons to hate Fuji are plenty and well founded. You don't have to be a pentaxian to hate Fuji, but it's true that Fuji is the anti-Pentax. Form (and larping) over function every single time. Shitty ergonomics, shitty viewfinders, shitty color filter arrays, shitty built quality (but look it's silver!!!). The only Pentax that even approaches the level of lameness Fuji has is the KP.

Yeah, so do similar cameras made for the same thing. It's done for durability. I prefer fully articulated myself, but it's not something you can really use to attack Pentax. All the cameras in the same class sport it (7D II, D7200)
K-3 III also has the highest magnification viewfinder of any APS-C or larger DSLR in existence, 1.05x.

Hm, focus peaking that's not available in the viewfinder is still not great though. Another not so great thing, there's a focus indicator that confirms focus as you drive focus on the lens manually. Maybe there are third party matte screens for your camera

pentax doesn't just have very few (basically no) lenses, they don't have any good lenses. unless you're a "pentaxian" and call everything you shoot sharp because you just spent $500 on a 25 year old lens design from a company that went out of business because they were unable to deliver competitive quality.
